  1. Then you file and get the show on the road. Your x2b needs to step up and meet his obligations towards his child(ren). He has abandoned you and the kids -- this is as good a time to file as any. I don't know about your state, but here where I live, Legal Aid will help you file your divorce if you have kids.
  2. Can you get a part time job to raise the cash to buy something a little better than a clunker? I understand needing a car that's reliable. Throwing more money into this one sounds wasteful. I'd raise the cash for a new one and not put anything more into the one you have.
  3. This is a lie. For one thing, every state has laws on the books that guarantee that you never have to take any medication or vaccine the government is handing out. This is how these stupid, completely false information about health care and vaccines gets started. It would be good to have the url of the website that is posting this. It should be reported to the urban legends websites so they can be documented as false.
  4. Thank you! This gives us an option. I'll check out the group.
  5. Isn't Sonlight religious? How much deity do they put in it. We can ignore a few references to God, but if it's steeped in religion, it won't work for us.
  6. Are any of these on CD? He's very much into computers.
  7. I'm helping someone put together a curriculum for a sixth grader who just began homeschooling. I'm sort of stuck here -- my ds is in fifth and I haven't thought that far ahead. The little guy hasn't had any world history, so he should begin with the nomads/ancients. And they prefer a secular curriculum. I'd love to hear your suggestions. I was going to have to do all this research in six months anyway -- may as well do it now. :bigear: :bigear: :bigear: :bigear: :bigear:
  8. What would you use with a sixth grader who has never taken logic or critical thinking before? He was ps'd up until June. He's just starting 6th grade at home. He's smart and engaged, but has no previous critical thinking or pre-logic skills.
  9. On the contrary. It's just about as salty as you are, so it's the most comfortable water for your eyes. It's like saline solution, which is what the doctor would use to clean your eyes. Plain water would irritate them.
  10. Regarding the reaction to mortar, they will use non-reactive stuff when they build your salt pool. Ours is five years old and looks exactly like when we had it built. I can see how the salt would damage some materials. All our plumbing is PVC or whatever that white pipe is made of. No metal parts. I'm sure the salt would eat that.
  11. Salt! Absolutely. We built our pool five years ago. When it was time to decide, we did some research and opted for salt. It was the best decision we ever made. In a chlorine pool, you pour several gallons of chlorine into your pool all at once almost every week. It's nearly impossible to use it on the same day you do that. For the next few days, the chlorine dissipates slowly until it gets too low, your pool is about to go green, and you do it all again. Chlorine is a known carcinogen. The less you are in contact with, the better. It also irritates the lungs and eyes. With a salt pool, the salt turns very slowly into chlorine in minute amounts -- just enough to keep your pool perfectly clean, not enough that you are aware of it in any way. There is never any chlorine that you can detect in the water. Your hair doesn't turn to hay, your never come out with bloodshot eyes. You certainly can't smell any. The kids don't need to rinse off after the pool. The water in the shower has more chlorine than what they just came out of. The water is like pasta water. You can barely taste the salt -- not like ocean water. We love our pool! We threw in a heater and it's year-round delicious.
  12. Any secular astronomy programs for upper elementary? Everyone raves about Apologia's astronomy book, but we prefer completely secular material for science. How much "god" is in the Apologia book? Do they reference deity constantly? Can I get away using this book in our atheist home?
  13. For the record, we've switched from Singapore to TT this year. We are very happy. Ds loves it. And he's learning very quickly.
  14. It's available for the Mac now. I got an email from TT the other day letting users know that if they need MAC disks, they should send back all but the one they're using, and TT will replace them with a Mac set. Check out their website -- I haven't been there since the email, but they must have an announcement there.
  15. I don't know the program you're using, but reading and writing are two very different skill sets. To force a child to write at first grade level only because he's ready to read at that level is a mistake. I suggest that you split these two subjects. Can you do only the reading portions? What exactly does the writing portion entail? Is it just handwriting practice? Is it composition? If it's not possible to separate the reading and writing, you may have to scrap this curriculum. It's doesn't sound like a good fit for your little guy.
  16. What's the point of sitting for the PSAT if you don't think she's going to make it to the top 2%? It would be an exercise in futility. Go to Disney World instead.
  17. It's not for violating district policy. It's for violating a court order. They've been praying over kids for a long time. People complained. Everyone in America that pays taxes is not Christian. They wouldn't stop. They were taken to court and a the judge issued an order specifically prohibiting them from praying during public school activities. They both knew they were breaking court order. I would be very, very offended if someone exposed my children to their personal religious beliefs during a public school activity. I hope they spend a few weeks in jail.
  18. Back in early summer, I flew to Boston and back. A few days after I returned, I came down with the most awful flu I've had in ages. I was down for 10 days with fevers and aches and the whole nine yards. I'd hate to get the new vaccine if I've already had it. Anybody know if there's a test to determine swine flu immunity that can be done at a doctor's office? Has anyone had it? :bigear: :bigear: :bigear:
  19. I very much doubt a public high school 12th grader could pass this test. More validation that we're doing the right thing by keeping our children home. This article should be "REQUIRED" reading for every public school teacher, principal and highly paid hanger-on in the public school system. I'd make them tack it to their front doors so every parent could read it. Public schools have done a terrible disservice to American children for the past 50 years. Too bad it's "nobody's fault" and nobody will be held accountable. Our solution is to "quietly withdraw" from international testing so the rest of the world doesn't realize how breathtakingly undereducated our children are.
  20. Did you graduate? Seriously, just getting into medical school after dropping out of high school is a huge accomplishment.
  21. That's also untrue and was debunked in the 90's. At some point in the early 20th century, a lab tested the iron in spinach and came up with a huge number. This research spawned the likes of Popeye, etc. Many years later (late 20th century), the lab work was repeated by a different lab. The original lab had been off by a factor of 100. Turns out spinach has about the same iron content in other green leafy veggies -- some, but not a lot, and most certainly not more than red meat. Look up "spinach iron content debunk" and a whole bunch of articles will come up.
