  1. I posted this a couple of years ago. Things may have changed with Seton, but these were my issues then: I had problems with Seton grading. Often I would get very frustrated because I wouldn't know how to guide my dc to write their papers because I didn't know what the graders were looking for. I would do my best and sometimes we'd be way off. It would also take forever to make study guides for tests because I didn't have the answer key, I would have to search for the answers myself (and sometimes I got it wrong). At the time, we were also doing Saxon Algebra 1 and Seton had their own multiple choice questions tests which drove me nuts because there were sometimes mistakes in the tests. Had I not gone though the tests myself and pointed mistakes out. They would have been marked wrong. Also, I felt it was unfair that were not given partial credit for getting most of the math problem right. My dc were enrolled in Seton for 3 years. By the time we reached 10th grade, we were experiencing severe burnout and high levels of anxiety. The only courses that we found effective were the English courses. Their religion and history courses rely too heavily on memorization of facts rather than an understanding of the overarching themes. Sometimes my kids would spend days memorizing for a test, which often could take up to four hours to complete. A week later they would have forgotten everything. Another complaint I had with Seton was the lack of advice regarding the courses my high schoolers should take to make their transcripts look good to colleges. We finally left Seton and have been enrolled with MODG over 4 years now and it's been so wonderful. I especially love the learning support classes they offer. It takes the workload off me for courses that are challenging and require lots of discussion.
  2. I needed to edit an item for sale as sold and could not find the edit button. Is it in a different place now? Thanks!
  3. We used to have glass doors :P Hated them. We use fabric shower liner that I can toss in the washing machine with bleach! The shower curtain itself is just there for prettiness. The liner gets washed about very 2 weeks.
  4. Watched Season 4 this spring and I'm still sad that there won't be another season.....withdrawals! :(
  5. Over the last 6 months I've been tying to sell some used curriculum at various places, but it seems like no one is interested. In the past, these books would get snapped up because they are popular titles. I guess folks are not buying as readily as they used to. Any of you having the same trouble I am? I've a whole boxful of stuff that just sits there now. :(
  6. Yes, he's done Geometry, I was thinking maybe College Algebra, but how do you list that on transcripts? I don't think consumer math counts as a math credit in GA, but I should check.
  7. My 11th grader is doing Lial's Intermediate Algebra, moving at a slow pace. We're only at chp 7. He's never been inclined toward math. I just can't see him doing Precalculus next year without struggling. Georgia requires 4 years of math for college. What should he do for 12th grade? Consumer math is not an option? Thanks so much for any advice.
  8. I live in Georgia, but have been watching it on South Carolina's SCETV. I haven't checked to see if GPB is airing it. I guess not all public TV stations are airing it. :( that's too bad. Season 3 is out on DVD though. My DD got tired of waiting for new episodes, so used her own $ to buy all 3 seasons because she loves it so much.
  9. PBS is almost done with Season 3. It's been airing Saturday evenings at 7 pm. I heard they are filming Season 4. Can't wait! Who's your favourite character? Minnie is my favourite!! :)
  10. Delightful Dictation---anyone use this? Would appreciate any input. :) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0557281008/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER
  11. Love Lark Rise to Candleford!! Just finished watching Season 3. Now waiting for Season 4!!
  12. We love the Chalkdust videos, but the Larson text can be too challenging for some kids. We had to drop it for a couple of kids, but my one mathy child did very well with it.
  13. Another possible reason for fogginess is hypoglycemia. My husband has a very bad case and we have discovered that my eldest son has it too. These two have to stay away from sugar or anything that turns into sugar quickly. They become foggy-brained and lethargic.
  14. For my ds who can't use Saxon, he did Chalkdust for Algebra 1, but it was difficult to use the Larson text. We're using Lial's Intermediate Algebra for Alg II and it's a perfect fit. The explanations are clear and the problem sets are just the right amount.
  15. Having used Saxon all the way through Advanced Math with a couple of my kids, I would never use Saxon Algebra II with a child who did not use Saxon Algebra I. The way concepts are presented in Saxon is so peculiar to the program that it would be difficult to jump in midway. Just my 2 cents.
  16. I've complained a lot about Saxon Math on this forum. 2 of my eldest dc used Saxon through Advanced Math. Then we switched to different progarms. Both of these dc are now sophomores in college and have both credited their years of Saxon to success with math in college. :001_huh: It is the "automacity" that was achieved through Saxon that they are grateful for. Having said that, I do have one child that absolutely cannot use Saxon. I am rethinking whether I should go back to Saxon for some of my other kids who can "handle" the Saxon style. Postscript: After looking at Saxon Alg 1 all morning and working out a few lessons, I think I'll stick with Foerster's. All the jumping around of topics reminded why we left Saxon. It might be fine at the lower levels, up to 7/6, but beyond that I think for many children can't make the connection between topics. It's safer, I feel to use a more traditional text.
  17. Text: ISBN-10: 0321279204 ISBN-13: 978-0321279200 Solutions: ISBN-10: 0321285697 ISBN-13: 978-0321285690 DVT: ISBN: 0-321-28570-0 These are the ones I have. The 8th edition.
  18. Can anyone share with me their course schedule for Lial's Intermediate Algebra or have any suggestions for completing this course in one school year? TIA :)
  19. It's very sad. Over and over again my dd in college hears from her friends that they were cheated out of an education in high school. In her College Algebra class, 80% of the students were failing and many withdrew. There was a day when students are solving problems on the board and my dd factored 5x-5= 5(x-1) and the professor said to her,"Oh, you're the smart one." She was shocked at the comment because the problem was basic.
  20. DS 8th grade is using Foerster's this year. This is my favorite Algebra 1 text. It is very straight forward text and has many challenging word problems. We had used Jacob's with another DS and it did not work well for us....not our learning style.
  21. This must be a new policy at Kolbe because we registered for Physics only last year and we bought the solutions manual through them. The solutions are printed on blood red paper which makes it very difficult to read. I wonder if they used that color paper to prevent photocopying. I had to agree not to resell it.
