  1. Hey, guys!! Just bumping to say that we finally moved to the Dallas area!! I started a meetup group in our area for homeschool playdates to network with others and am always recommending this site to them for a wealth of resources. :) Woohoo - I love the HS environment out here.
  2. I just purchased these for my DD (1st grade). I'm hoping that it'll work well for us. We've started on both FLL and WWE, but they are so slow and my DD is extremely eager, so I'm hoping this will be a little more aggressive for her.
  3. A "princess tea party" would be fun - or princess "makeovers" (does not have to be elaborate OR use real makeup!) sticker earrings, trinket jewelry, dress up fun
  4. Leslie Sansone has a walk or two for teens - and I totally think pilates, yoga, or any kind of dance workout would be a good fit. :)
  5. I have a pre-k kid that is doing some kindergarten work and I have a 1st grader. If we're having a really school-intensive day, it may take 4 hours total. That's with a lot of breaks and a lot of that is doing one kid at a time. On a better (and more reasonable) day, we might spend 2 hours total. We're really focusing on the 3Rs right now and I pretty much combine the rest.
  6. My daughter loves Yahtzee and Checkers, my older 2 love Memory
  7. Scholastic has classroom magazines that homeschooling parents can subscribe to. They're a bit more expensive to homeschoolers just requesting 1 copy, but they're still fairly inexpensive. Each month, they send you the magazines for each week during that month. I love using these as a starting point for unit studies. They have one magazine called "Let's Find Out!" and it's language arts, social studies, and science-based. http://teacher.scholastic.com/products/classmags/lfo.htm Check out their "editorial calendar" for more info. We like to do our science studies around what comes in the mail from Scholastic each month because it is just a fun way to reinforce scientific concepts!
  8. This makes sense... I think she just needs some good, regular practice stringing them together
  9. Thank you all very much! I will continue to post the alphabet and the numbers for her and will make myself bite my tongue. :) Awesome! Thanks for the perspective!
  10. The free Meet The Masters looks like a good one! It's from the free curriculum list: http://www.getinvolvedineducation.com/pdfs/For-Program-Managers/Meet-the-Masters-Program-Manual.pdf
  11. My DD is in K, but doing mostly 1st grade work.... anyway, I was curious as to your take on this.. When she does math assignments or writing assignments, she has trouble recalling what the numbers and letters look like to do her assignments. She always requests that I write the numbers (1-10) on her math papers before she gets started or she will move to a room with the alphabet posted before she will do writing assignments. Should I be concerned? How long does it normally take for this exposure to become memorized? I want to get her started in more writing assignments and possibly spelling, but if she can't recall what the letters look like, should I even bother? Sorry if this is a rookie question, I'm just stumped. :)
  12. :iagree: My DD began a K curriculum when she turned 4 and finished it well before her 5th birthday. We're doing all 1st grade stuff this year but are calling it Kindergarten since that's what she'd be placed it if she went to public school.
  13. Ordinary Parent's Guide to Reading (2-3x a week) Handwriting worksheets from dollar store 2x/week Math Mammoth 1a & 1b once the Homeschool Buyer's Co-op closes... until then, we're continuing with MEP (3-4x a week) FIAR (sort of) - I have a list of 1 book per week... some are from FIAR, some are from various other sources and we're making them a short unit study... This week is The Runaway Bunny, next week is Curious George, then The Very Hungry Caterpillar, then we're moving on to more meaty stuff. ;) Harcourt science w/workbook (will be 2x a week when we get to this in week 8) Abeka Health/Safety/Manners (2x a week for 7 weeks) Abeka My Country, My World (1-2x a week) Lots of phonics readers/story time Tons of free play time Oh and we're doing the Art Pac 1 once a week I've divided all of our books and lessons into 36 weeks and will be dividing all the work into 5 days as we come up to each week... so the days per week are approximate. :) We just started today and she enjoys it so far. We're pretty loose around here... As long as it gets done, free play the rest of the day is fine by me!

  15. usually my kids have a cold lunch - meat, cheese, fruit or something like that... We do eat hot stuff sometimes, though... corn dogs, chicken tenders, pasta sometimes... just not very regularly
  16. Cupcakes would be easy! Cupcakes freeze really well and then you could ice them before leaving - carrot cake or banana nut muffins would be good too with some cream cheese frosting! YUMYUM! What about some kind of tarts? Apple tarts or peach tarts?
  17. Sounds just crazy enough to work! LOL LMK how these turn out!
  18. Looks good to me! I really wish there was something similar here!
  19. I think we ended up paying something like $22 for a subscription to the 1st grade SN and the Clifford preschool magazine. You have to call customer service and they can give you an exact price as it is different for the home educator than for the school teacher buying in bulk. My kids really enjoyed it. We actually could do most of the activities in there without writing on it, so I'm saving all of them for future years! My kids love them and really enjoy the colorful pictures and the fun activities that follow. It was also great reading practice for my DD.
  20. My older kids gave up naps around 2.5 years old.... I don't remember ever napping when I was in K (even though we had a long nap time after lunch)
