  1. Recently dh and I had legal paperwork (wills, power of attorney, guardianship) done by our lawyer. I need help coming up with a letter for dh's doctor to sign. The Statutory Durable Power of Attorney states, "If Alternative (B) is chosen and a definition of my disability or incapacity is not contained in this power of attorney, I shall be considered disabled or incapacitated for purposes of this power of attorney if a physician certifies in writing at a date later than the date this power of attorney is executed that , based on the physician's medical examination of me, I am mentally incapable of managing my financial affairs. Alternative B states "This power of attorney becomes effective upon my disability or incapacity. Dh has brain cancer. Surgery, radiation, the tumor, and chemo have taken/are taking their toll on dh's mental faculties. His cognitive abilities took a nose dive at the beginning and have been steadily declining. It has been just over one year since this all started, and I have been making all the decisions since then. I am in charge of everything, but I need to be legally in charge of everything. Dh can't decide if he's hungry or not, much less make financial decisions. Dh realizes this, and we talked with his doctor about it. Dh's doctor verified that dh wanted this letter. Doctor told me to write the letter, and he will sign. I need a letter that meets the requirements of the SPOA. I have to do this, but I don't have a lot of brain cells for this. If someone could help, I would really appreciate it.
  2. Several calls to customer service got me nowhere. They filed the claim and no one is in the claim department until Monday. I did find a plumber to fix the pipe. After $736 and three+ hours of holding a flashlight for the repairman (23 degrees and sleeting), my water is back on. Thanks for all the advice. I'll update later when I hear from the company.
  3. Called customer service. They have filed a complaint on the drivers. Nothing will be done about my property damage claim until next week, and they can't promise what will happen. I'm supposed to do whatever I need to do and they will "try and work with me". I've called around and can't find anyone to fix the water. Half of the people won't get out in the cold and the other half is so busy they can't get to it for a day or two. I'm going to keep calling, but 13ds and I will need to fix it within the next hour or so if I can't find someone. The parts are cheap. Maybe $15 at most for everything and we even already have on hand what we need. The problem is we have to dig a big hole, cut the broken pipe off with a hacksaw, clean and glue everything together, and pray it holds, while we are freezing in 25 weather with a 15mph north wind. Also, while we are waiting for all this to dry, we have no water in the house. No drinking, no potty, no laundry, and no cleaning up after we are muddy from fixing the pipe. I have taken pictures of everything. Dd picked up the smaller trash that was blowing everywhere, but we left the bigger pile for them to deal with. Of to make some more calls.
  4. Lowe's for parts to fix water line pick up trash delivery guys left buy groceries Walmart TSC for cow feed Target help dh with his end of year review help dd with English essay for TPS tons of laundry call mechanic and check on van call UPS to find missing package work on bills wash all sheets and put on new beds
  5. We ordered bedroom furniture from a well known chain and they delivered it this morning. While they were unpacking, the head guy asked where they could leave the boxes and trash because they didn't take it with them. I showed him a large trailer, on the other side of the house, where they could put it. He said that was too far and they would just stack it nice and neat by the house and we could move it later when it wasn't so cold. I was getting really irritated with him, but I said ok as long as it was nice and neat. They brought in all the furniture and set it up. They showed me a couple of chips in a bed and said they were ordering the replacement pieces. I signed the delivery slip and they left. Shortly after they left, we discovered we didn't have water. Son and I went out to check pipes and see what was wrong with the water. As soon as we stepped out the back door, I was mad. The big boxes were stacked nicely by the house, but styrofoam, desiccant packs, paper, and little plastic bags were scattered around the yard. A little further from the house, they turned the truck around. They backed the delivery truck over a clearly marked faucet, mangling the posts that marked it and breaking the pipe off at the ground. Water was everywhere. They backed over a ten year old Mexican White Oak that probably will not live. I loved that tree. The trash was just not caring, but I don't see how they could have not seen or heard something when they were destroying the faucet and the tree. I called the delivery customer service. They put in a dissatisfaction report on the drivers and connected me to regular customer service. Regular customer service said the delivery people are supposed to take the trash with them and cs is filing a damage claim for me. Someone will contact me this coming week about it. What should I expect to come of the claim? If they ask me what I want done about the situation, what should I ask for? I can't leave the trash for them to pick up because I have a cow that will eat it. I can't wait until someone comes out to fix the water because who knows when that will be and I need water. The tree will likely die and they can't replace a ten year old tree that has made it through years of Texas drought without babying. I'm mad about the whole situation, but the tree is what makes me the maddest. 13ds and I are going to Lowe's to get stuff to fix the water. This is not going to be pleasant. The temp is 23 with a windchill of 12. We have to dig down in the ground (in the mud) to see where we can mend the pipe. This is the main water faucet for the animals, so we can't just cap it and leave it. Freezing cold, wet, and muddy is not what I had planned for today.
  6. Does anyone know anything about refrigerator repairs? I have two refrigerators, one Whirlpool and one LG. They were working fine when I put groceries in them. The next day, both are broken. Lights are on, fans are blowing air and they are making refrigerator noises, but they are not cooling. What would make two perfectly fine refrigerators suddenly go out at the same time? Some extra info. These refrigerators are in our cabin. In the front yard of the cabin is our new doublewide where we are living. The cabin and the doublewide have electric straight off the pole. Both refrigerators are on the same circuit braker. Braker was not flipped, but I reset it anyway. I unplugged both and let them "rest" before plugging them back in and trying to get them running. I unplugged one and tried running only one on the circuit braker. That didn't fix anything. Tried running one off an extension cord run from the doublewide. They sound fine, but they just aren't cooling. Any ideas? Repairman can't come until Tuesday. He will work on the Whirlpool, but says he can't do much for the LG unless it is super easy. It has to do with them not being the area service provider.
  7. What are the best air purifiers? We are moving into a new mobile home. It is bigger than our current home, and I need more air purifiers. What do you recommend?
  8. UPDATE We purchased a new doublewide without meeting anyone in person, so health questions never came up. They did think it kind of weird that dh wasn't interested in the process. I did everything via email, and I was the contact person. They delivered the home today. Thanks so much for the advice.
  9. How do you air out a new mobile home? Our new doublewide will be delivered this afternoon. Several in the family have allergies; two have asthma. Normally, I wouldn't have even considered a mobile home due to the allergies/asthma, but with dh having a brain tumor it became super important to get better shelter now, hence the trailer instead of waiting six months for a home to be built. I know everything will be offgassing. We do have somewhere else to stay (inlaws), while we work on airing the new place out. How do we clean up the air as much as possible before we move in? The earliest we could move in would be two weeks, but we could wait longer if necessary. Someone suggested closing the house up so it will get hot inside (as supposedly offgas a lot) and then opening the windows. Lather, rinse, repeat. What do you think of this? Would it be helpful to have several airpurifiers in the different rooms? What can we do to clean the air as quickly as possible and avoid as many problems as we can?
  10. Are online wills legal? Does anyone have experience with legalzoom.com? Any other recommended sites?
  11. We have lots of books (3000+ at last count) and prefer owning our books since life is too busy to go to the library. They never seem to have what we want anyway. We wallpaper with books and have IKEA Billy bookcases, Besta cabinets, and Expedit cabinets everywhere. We also have several cases of books that won't fit on the shelves so we rotate books a couple of times a year.

  13. My family has a lot of mystery illnesses. Cancer, allergies, bronchiolitis, swollen lymph nodes, seizures, eczema, etc. Everyone is getting treated, but the doctors can't find a real reason for any of this. Several people have suggested that maybe something is wrong with our home. One of our doctors didn't know the details, but he had heard of taking a blood sample from all the members of a family, allergy testing it, and whatever a majority of the family is allergic to, that would be the problem to look for. If everyone shows allergic to a certain mold for instance, look for that mold. Does anyone know about this? The doctor had heard about it, but didn't know anything else about it.
  14. Make super sure they don't get infected. 13ds just had a severe reaction to a chigger bite (and he didn't have that many). A bite on the top of is foot got infected, was super swollen and pusy, and he had red streaks all the way up his leg before he though to mention it. The doctor gave him a shot of antibiotics and steroids and gave him twelve hours to show improvement or he would be admitted to the hospital for iv steroids and antibiotics. He showed just enough improvement that our doctor didn't admit him, but it took a long time to get completely well.
  15. break a pd file down so I can send it? I have a fifty page pdf file that is too large to send. I zipped it and it is still to large to send. I had a bunch of pages scanned at Staples, and they put them all in one file. How can I get this sent?
  16. We are buying a manufactured home and I am in process of filling out all the paperwork. In the required list of paperwork, I need a deed for our land. We bought our land fifteen years ago and paid if off eight years ago. We paid our last payment and didn't hear anything from the seller. We contacted him about the deed and were told that the didn't do paper deeds anymore. Whenever something required a deed, they would do a title search for the land and find us as owners. Where do I get a deed to send in with my paperwork?
  17. We are in Texas. Dh is currently working. Even when he had the craniotomy, he didn't officially take off. His supervisors and buddies just took care of things. Thanks for the info.
  18. Do banks ask health questions when you apply for a loan? We need a new home and dh was looking at manufactured homes. To get a home, we would need to get a loan. Friends told us it wasn't worth the trouble for us to apply since dh has brain cancer. They said a bank wouldn't even consider us since dh could die and they are in business to make money. Dh has a good job where he has been for seventeen years. Even if he were to die, the life insurance would pay it off. Do they ask health questions and would they not even consider us? UPDATE We purchased a new doublewide without meeting anyone in person, so health questions never came up. They did think it kind of weird that dh wasn't interested in the process. I did everything via email, and I was the contact person. They delivered the home today. Thanks so much for the advice
  19. I know we have discussed this, but my searches aren't turning up anything. What skills would you want your children to have before they leave home? I'm planning for next year and I can't find the threads.
  20. 8ish check in Everything continued to get mixed up today. Took 15dd to get blood test. Decided to get our doctor (across the waiting room) to look at her instead. Doctor looks at her and decides not to do the blood work. Can't figure out why she feels well, but has swollen lymph glands. Wait and see for a while. Once we got home, I started washing. Something was making black marks on the clothes. Wash a load. Check it. Dry it. Black marks. The dryer is guilty. Dh wants me to research (yes, right now) dryers at the local Lowes. Research and decided. He changed his mind. We will get a used one and next year we will buy a washer dryer set. I can wash but can't dry. This is a disaster in a family of eight. And we live on a farm. Go to town to buy clothes pins (yes, right now. Dh is just that kind of guy). Back home again and I have: pulled out the huge clothes dryer washed one load of laundry balanced the checking and credit card accounts called mil birthday card for tomorrow is signed by everyone three cards ready to mail small jar of orange toothpowder mixed gave children snack put children to bed started dh a mini meal/snack
  21. I will if things slow down enough. The "have to do" things we planned were see the chiropractor, buy a birthday card, and do school. We got stuck in the elevator at the chiropractor for 30 minutes (The repairman who opened the door looked surprised to find eight people sitting squished on the floor reading books.) and bought the card. Dh started feeling sick from chemo on the way home so we stopped and got crackers and water for him, and quick stuff for lunch. Check my email at home and our family doctor wants 15dd to be retested for mono, even though the last test was negative. So, quick lunch, get dh settled in the bedroom, and off to town for blood tests. For the rest of the day: blood tests for 15dd school balance checking and credit card accounts five loads of laundry call mil give dh chemo tonight get card signed by everyone for party tomorrow get cards ready to send to others make toothpowder box up jackets and coats
  22. We have several big health issues in our family. Dh has brain cancer. 8dd had cancer. 18dd has epilepsy. 15 dd has severe allergies. I have adrenal/thyroid issues. Since we have so many different problems, it has been recommended that we check our land/home. Who do I contact, and what do we test for? I can't even think of what to search for. They are talking about things like lead, but what else. We live in the country, have city water, built our cabin ourself.
  23. 18dd is having a terrible time with writing. We are struggling our way through Writing With Skill, but it just isn't working for her. I need something bare bones that covers real life writing, like letters, business letters, etc. She is not going to college. Help please!
