  1. Another update: The manager called this afternoon and told me I could open my new account whenever it was convenient. If I came when she was there, I wouldn't have any extra hoops to jump through since she already had all of my information. I went right away and opened my new accounts. It is law, not credit union policy, that I have to open my own accounts. Apparently our old account wasn't frozen yet. Not really. The manager is trying to help to me and is holding off passing on the paperwork. As soon as she sends the paperwork in, the accounts will freeze and I won't have access to any money left in the accounts. I will eventually get this money, but it could take a while. I didn't know she was holding up the paperwork and the way she has been saying it made it sound like the accounts were already frozen. Really, I just needed to stop using the accounts so transactions could clear out and I need to change all of my bill pay transactions. Several things have cleared, but I am still waiting on the electric bill and the children's social security. I'm keeping track online and as soon as things clear I will call, and she will transfer the money to my new account and send in the paperwork. I opened new checking and savings accounts, and the manager moved money from the old accounts but left enough to cover the electric bill. I don't have a debit card or checks yet, but I can go to the bank and withdraw whatever I need. I can't wait until this bump in the road is fixed. I've got lots of other things to do and just want to check this one off my list.
  2. The credit union manager is who I have been talking with. I only know what she has told me, but I will ask to see the policy in writing. My lawyer took care of all necessary paperwork before Steven passed away, but as long as we were both on the accounts, he didn't advise changing anything. I have talked with him recently, but he is waiting on me to be ready to probate the will which I'm not doing until I get finances sorted out and talk with our financial advisor. I couldn't settle any of Steven's accounts (joint accounts but he's primary on all of them) until I knew what our financial situation is going to be. I have been waiting to find out about the life insurance and the children's social security survivor benefits. Both are finally taken care of (I know what they are, but they are in the frozen account) and now I have an appointment with our financial adviser. After that appointment I will see the lawyer to probate the will. When I get an account and the frozen money, I will talk with the other credit union and credit cards we have accounts with. But since our main account is frozen, we are living on the credit card, and I don't want to rock the boat.
  3. I'm so sorry for all of you who have lost someone. It's hard enough without all of the extra red tape people make for you. When I first talked with the credit union, they froze our account and wouldn't give much info other than I had to have a new account. I've talked with them several times since then and have a little more info than I did before. The account is frozen and will stay frozen until they close it. There won't be any problem getting me the money from the account after they close it, but they are trying to keep it open so some pending transactions can clear. Right now, I have several pending debits (electric company, cell phone, home phone), outstanding checks for our mortgage and to the funeral home, and the children's first social security survivor benefits to be deposited first of next week. If they close the account all of these transactions will not be accepted by the credit union, and I will have more work trying to clear up bounced transactions. After these transactions clear, the credit union says it shouldn't take long to close the account and open the new one in my name, but they can't give me a more exact timeline. There is still the possibility that someone in some department at the credit union won't get the memo and will close the account prematurely, but they are trying to keep it open until these remaining transactions clear. Why I can't keep the same account, noone can tell me. They say that's just the way it is. That means a lot of changing direct deposits, automatic bill pay, new checks (you're right LC, I'm not looking forward to that), etc, but I can't even begin any of that because I don't have a new account to direct these things to. Right now, the frozen money is inconvenient, but we're ok. Thanks for the hugs and the advice. I knew I could count on the hive for both.
  4. Steven passed away May 30. Our credit union where we have checking and savings accounts, found out last week about Steven and froze our account. We were both on the account, with Steven as primary and me as secondary. The credit union says I will need my own brand new account. I took them the information they requested, and they said they will call when the legal stuff is done and I can open my new account. Is this how things are done now? My mom is still using the account she and my dad had, even though he passed away in 2008. UPDATE in #18. Another UPDATE in #34.
  5. Thanks for the help. A board member fixed it for me.
  6. I have a picture of the children and Katrina (hospice nurse) taken the day before Steven passed away. The photo is clear, but there is a spot in the center of the photo, right at the top of Katrina's head. The spot has a bit of Katrina's hair and dd's shirt so it shouldn't be too hard to fix if someone would tell me how. I have photoshop elements, but have never used it. Please tell me how to get rid of the spot? The children are making memory albums and really want this picture included.
  7. We're back. The children had a wonderful time in the pool, and none were even slightly afraid of the water. An uncle and aunt took the boys and older girls and showed them the basics. I took care of the little girls. The little girls wore life jackets, but they did take them off when I could focus on them one at a time. The children did really well, but still need lots of practice. I'm looking for somewhere that we can swim. We don't have a YMCA, but there are several gyms in the area, and I'm hoping one of them will have a pool. Thanks for all the advice.
  8. I need help organizing paperwork. Not school papers, but things like deeds, bills, receipts, etc. Right now, I have a fireproof box with ss cards, birth certificates, death certificate, and marriage license. What else do I need to keep? What do I keep it in?
  9. We will be there Monday through Sunday. There will be a bunch of cousins, but they have lots of things to do and prefer going out in the boat to pool swimming. I feel safer with the pool, a confined area where I can see things better. Since Steven's death, his brother has stepped up to help out, especially with the boys. Maybe he can give them swimming lessons while we are there. I'll be calling next week to see if the pool will allow life vests. Thanks for the help.
  10. We are going to our family reunion in a week. There will be a pool. I have six children, and they have never been swimming. What kind of "swim gear" should we have? I'm talking about safety type things like life jackets or whatever. The oldest ones will be ok, but I'm concerned about the younger three (11, 9, 6). I need to make sure they are safe. The older three can help watch, but if something happened they couldn't help since they can't swim.
  11. My children do not know how to swim at all. I know how to swim, but have not been swimming in 15+ years. The children really want to learn, but what is the best way to accomplish this. I have 19, 16, 14, 11, 9, and 6. We do have pools and swim lessons available, but do I enroll all of them in level 1? I can't see that working very well. Maybe it would work better for our family to have private lessons. How would I find private lessons?
  12. My family doesn't do reunions. Dh's family, on his father's side, does reunions. They have it in the same state park, in July every year, and they rent most of the cabins on one cul de sac. Same cabins every year. The first person to arrive gets the keys to all the cabins. They have been doing this for so long that if someone says uncle so and so's cabin, you know exactly which cabin they mean. We check in Monday afternoon and check out Sunday at lunch. Everyone mingles around and does whatever they want. Mostly everyone visits or plays games. Some fish, swim, or go out in the boat. Noone heads off for entertainment. Everyone does go to Charlie's for catfish one day while we are there. One uncle always gets a pickup truck of watermelons and passes them out. Friday night is always a big potluck meal. Sunday morning we have a church service all together before packing up and heading back home. Cabins are rented two years in advance when you turn in the keys. No one really plans it. They have been doing it this way so long that everyone knows what's going on. If you can't make it that week, they don't change it.
  13. Steven went to be with Jesus this afternoon.
  14. We know you are praying, but we are asking for special prayer for Steven this evening. This battle will be won one way or the other very soon. We are praying and believing for complete healing and restoration. Join us in prayer at 6pm central time. Please ask everyone you know to pray with us this evening. Blessings, Melinda
  15. It appears that Steven will not be healed here on this earth, and that he will leave us soon. He has been bedridden for several weeks, but was talkative and responsive when I left for town this afternoon. For the last couple of weeks he has talked non-stop and was eating everything he could get his hands on. When I got back from town, he was sleeping and my mil said he slept the entire time I was gone. He has no interest in food. He is just barely here it seems. Conscious, but slow breathing, eyes closed, whisper voice. Things are very sad here. Please pray for us.
  16. I'm looking for heavy duty bags with zippers. The kind you get when you buy sheet and blankets. Where can I find these?
  17. I'm so sorry for your loss. Praying for you and your daughter.
  18. My 13ds received an engraved multi-tool as a gift. He carries it everywhere and uses it every day.
  19. A few weeks ago, my dh was placed on hospice. I texted my mil and fil as soon as I knew that was what we would be doing. My fil was in the waiting room and my mil was at home. They knew I was having a big meeting with the doctor, and I knew they would want to know immediately. They were fine with it. I texted one of my close friends and told her about Steven being put on hospice. I happened to see another friend that doesn't text, and I told her in person. She could not believe that I would text something like that. I told her that I had met my crying limit for the day, but I wanted them to know. Sometimes it comes down to telling you via email or text or not telling you at all.
  20. A friend mentioned a series of early readers that are like Bob Books, but she says they are called Dad Books. I can't find anything about them. Has anyone ever heard of these?
  21. Thank you everyone for your advice. It's only within the last couple of months that this has been an issue. Dh doesn't have a preference as to which bathroom we use. He has a lot of trouble deciding even the simplest things (are you hungry?do you have a headache?) and if I ask him he will just say he doesn't know and do whatever I think is best. We do try and avoid using public bathrooms, but sometimes it can't be avoided. We have also timed our stop at Target for the middle of our errand running because they are the only place in our town that has a family restroom. I usually have at least one of my boys with me, so they will be able to scope out the restroom for me. Thanks so much for all of your help.
  22. If there is not a full load of anything to wash, I am caught up.
  23. I had some trouble because this is my first year doing them alone. Some of the paperwork I needed was going to dh's work email that I don't have access to so I had to have someone help me find the info. But, I did get it all into TurboTax. That was 1am this morning though, and I wanted to look it over again, when I was actually awake, to make sure everything was ok. I'm going to try and finish it up this evening.
