  1. Hey, I made it to 52 already! And I am definitely on a memoir kick. 52. "The Terrorist's Son: A Story of Choice" by Zak Ebrahim with Jeff Giles. Perfect timing, given the recent "protests." Based on his Ted Talk, this is the story of how Z came to choose a life of peace, even though he was the son of a man who helped plan the World Trade Center garage bombing. It's a quick read, just shy of 100 pages. 51. "Touching the Void: The True Story of One Man's Miraculous Survival" by Joe Simpson. 50. 2. I inadvertently did a similar social experiment a year ago. We took the same vacation we usually take, making the same pit stops, and eating at the same restaurants, etc., only we decided to ride down on my husband's motorcycle. So instead of wearing the usual T-shirt, shorts, and flip-flops popular in that destination, we were in our leather vests and boots. (DH was sporting a big, scruffy, biker's beard, too.) It was very enlightening. It was very odd to have other women skirt around me in the ladies room. On the other hand, people I would have avoided previously, like the scruffy teenagers smoking in the back, were very friendly, so I came home thinking about biases I didn't know I had. So adding this thought into what I was saying above, sometimes we are kind of using the same thinking we are protesting when we are protesting prejudice, in that, it's really focused on what the other people are doing. "Look how terrible society is, because they are so bigoted," all while we are thinking we are above that. When I examine my own thinking, I find some not right (and kind of odd) thinking. For instance, two doors down, we have a mixed race couple. She's from Cape Verde, Africa. She and I have similar educational backgrounds, and we've both lived in Europe, and we go to the same church, so we are fairly good friends, but I find myself avoiding her white husband (I'm white), because he's big and he's a truck driver. Something about him has turned him into a "them" in my mind, and I need to fix that. The way I see it, healthy dialogue brings awareness, and awareness can be very productive if it starts first with what can I change about myself, then moves to influencing my children, and then spreads out from there. I'm realizing I can tell my children all day long that it's wrong for the restaurant to refuse service to someone because of skin color, but if I'm still avoiding the truck driver, my kids are not hearing my words. (And I hope no one thinks I'm calling you out. I'm feeling that introspective today. There's something I really, really want right now, and the biggest thing holding me back is me.)
  3. 51. "Touching the Void: The True Story of One Man's Miraculous Survival" by Joe Simpson. Memoir of a climber who broke his leg and was left behind when his partner thought he was dead. He survived, obviously, to write the book. 50. "Why We Write About Ourselves: Twenty Memoirists on Why They Expose Themselves (and Others) in the name of Literature" ed. by Meredith Maran. Inspirational! Interesting look at what they leave out, too. 49. "Write Your Memoir: The soul work telling your story" by Dr. Allan G. Hunter. 48. 4. If I actually want to write my memoir, I need to write, not read about writing. :001_rolleyes: But I liked these, especially Dr. Hunter's book. 49. 5. See an endo. "The range" for TSH is for all human beings, and includes men, twenty year old women, etc. Women who are no longer 20 something have a different range. Feeling lousy physically is always going to affect how you feel mentally. :grouphug:
  6. I think it's like reading a memoir. Acknowledging their stories. An act of respect. I've never stopped or looked up a roadside cross, but my late father was a professional genealogist, so hanging out reading stones in the cemetery seems perfectly normal to me. I heard that the roadside crosses came out of the Hispanic Catholic idea that you need to put a cross as close as possible to where the soul departed the body to help protect the soul, but I don't know if that's true. (I can't remember where I heard it, so I couldn't say if it was a reliable source.)
  7. 47. "The Story of Science" by Susan Wise Bauer. I haven't read the suggested readings yet. That will be the next pass! I love learning how one thing led to the next. So much of my education was pieces here and there with no context, even at the college level. 46. "The Kids' Guide to Staying Awesome and in Control" by Lauren Brukner. 45. "Freaks, Geeks & Asperger Syndrome" by Luke Jackson. 44. "Seven Miracles That Saved America" by Chris Stewart and Ted Stewart (LDS). 43. 8. Time to read while waiting for the kids at piano lessons, which is preferable to waiting at the doctor's office! :P 48. "How to Write a Memoir in 30 Days" by Roberta Temes, PhD. Yes, I'm working on one, and this is my favorite of several how to's I've read. I'm on day 20 in the homework, but finished the reading today. 47. "The Asperkids' Secret Book of Social Rules" by Jennifer Cook O'Toole. I'll assign this one to my oldest, but I actually got some ideas for myself from it, too. I'm not Aspergers, but I do have social anxiety, and that has led to what my therapist has termed "immature social skills." (I have good manners, but I've kept all my friendships at the casual acquaintance level for most of my life, deliberately, because of the social anxiety, and now that I have some closer friends, I stumble a bit figuring out when to text vs when to call vs when to stop by, and those subtle friendship rules like that.) 46. 9. 46. "The Kids' Guide to Staying Awesome and in Control" by Lauren Brukner. Nice, straight-forward guide to OT type activities for sensory issues. Written at a kid level, so I'm going to assign it as reading to my older two, and work through it with my youngest. 45. "Freaks, Geeks & Asperger Syndrome" by Luke Jackson. 44. "Seven Miracles That Saved America" by Chris Stewart and Ted Stewart (LDS). 43. "The Reading Promise: My Father and the Books We Shared" by Alice Ozma. 42. 10. Mom instincts are often right on. But you are wondering if something is wrong, which is a mom instinct, too. Social anxiety doesn't look the same in everyone. It is possible to be an extrovert and have social anxiety, and that looks quite different than stereotypical social anxiety, which is closer to what it looks like in an introvert. I have social anxiety, but I'm not an introvert (though I thought I was before my diagnosis). I'm more of an ambivert. I can socialize. I love to talk to people, as long as it's small talk. I don't share my feelings with anyone in real life, not even my mother. I can't. My anxiety goes through the roof. I hate making eye contact, because somebody might see the real me. (A diagnosis has helped, because now I am aware that the message in my head that tells me people don't really like me is probably not real.)
  11. 45. "Freaks, Geeks & Asperger Syndrome" by Luke Jackson. I loved this one! The author was thirteen when he wrote it, and he does have Aspergers. It sounded just like my son, only with a British accent! Well done, but also written in Asperger conversational tone. I've recommended it to a couple of RL friends who happen to have sons on the Spectrum about that same age. 44. "Seven Miracles That Saved America" by Chris Stewart and Ted Stewart (LDS). 43. 12. I organize my books loosely by subject and sub-topic, so a bookcase for science with Astronomy on one shelf, Biology on one shelf, etc. Fiction is alphabetical by author. Except.... everyone has a small bookcase in his or her room for personal favorites, and what I'm currently reading is stacked all over, some by the bed, some in the bathroom, some in the car. And ... there's one big bookcase whose subject would have to be "books I have recently acquired and don't know where to put yet"... I do keep library books in one place, so they don't get mixed with my own, and every purchased book is cataloged on librarything as it's taken out of the bag. (DH was tired of my accidental duplicates.)
  13. Whittling down my stack of library books, but running out of time, since they are due on Saturday. Won't be the first time I take some back unread, even after renewing them. 44. "Seven Miracles That Saved America" by Chris Stewart and Ted Stewart (LDS). Conservative view of history, of course. Anybody know a good, readable account of the Battle of Midway? I realized I know next to nothing about it after reading the account here. Or the war in the Pacific, in general, really, which is negligent of me, since my grandfather was killed there. (I did read "Unbroken" last year. And I loved "Black Sheep Squadron" in rerun, but I doubt that counts as a good education.) 43. "The Reading Promise: My Father and the Books We Shared" by Alice Ozma. Grabbed this one from the "Staff Picks" shelf at the library. A memoir about a commitment between a father and daughter to read for 1000 consecutive nights and how it lead to a reading relationship that lasted until she left for college. 42. "Unsolved Mysteries of American History" by Paul Aron. 41. "The Out-of-Sync Child Grows Up" by Carol Stock Kranowitz. 40. "Look Me in the Eye: my life with asperger's" by John Elder Robison. 39. 15. 41. "The Out-of-Sync Child Grows Up" by Carol Stock Kranowitz. Lots of interviews with teens and young adults about growing up with SPD. Very encouraging, as most are fully functional adults. 16. Thanks! It looks like my mother-in-law's community has these.
  17. My mother-in-law thinks so. That looks great! If you get a chance, could you check on that? My mother-in-law is LDS and she remembers something like that, but can't find it now. The current LDS program, "Daily Dose" emphasizes speaking, and doesn't seem to provide worksheets, as far as I can tell. I'll pass those links on, too. Thanks!
  18. My mother-in-law wants to help her new Cambodian sister-in-law learn to read and write English. She speaks enough to get by, but doesn't really know the English alphabet. Any suggestions where to start?

  21. Build your own? Something like this: http://designsbystudioc.com/make-desk-organizing-cups-with-pvc/
  22. I think it would appeal to both of my girls (6 & 11), so we'd love to try it.
  23. I just subscribed to audible earlier this summer. DH installed iTunes on my laptop, following these instructions, I think. Or these. I used iTunes on my windows PC laptop to burn them to CD, which played just fine in my ancient car CD player, which is so finicky it won't play CDs from the library because of their security bar code. (We also don't own iAnythings.)
  24. My mom is a voracious reader. She got us each library cards as soon as we were allowed, and we never went to the library less than once a week. She and I share the same addiction to buying books, to the dismay of our respective husbands. My late father didn't read quite as much, and didn't care for fiction, but it's from him I learned to read in the bathroom. (He always kept the Reader's Digest in there.) My brothers are avid readers, too. When he died last year, my inheritance was about 600 books loosely relating to the field of genealogy. I'm such a voracious reader that my dad would often put my books in time out as a punishment. He'd put them on the shelf in his closet and tell me how much trouble I'd be in if I got them down. So I'd climb up and sit on the shelf and read them there! DH is dyslexic. Reading is exhausting for him, though he'll read stuff related to his field of expertise (computers) or hobbies (inc. Barbershop Harmony). He likes to listen to audio books and he used to read aloud to the kids. My kids aren't big readers, between inherited dyslexia and ASD. DS only reads non-fiction unless assigned. DD11 likes stories and will read things like American Girls, but prefers audio books. Little one is just learning, so I don't know yet.
