  1. I remember you. I've been around for… How long have these boards been around?
  2. No Cherokee in us. Scottish, Irish, English. The girl in black/pink is from France. She is staying with us. She is 1/2 Portuguese.
  3. I just have to share our latest bit of fun. I have always been into film-making, dress-up, acting since I was a kid so this has passed onto my kids also. We have been blessed to have a girl staying with us from France this summer and she has really enjoyed watching all our past movies we have made. So we decided to make one with her and she was thrilled. We did all our shooting yesterday and today we start editing. Anyhow, we have this really cute picture I took that we turned into our "movie poster" and I wanted to share it with you. Four of the girls are my daughters. Want to guess which 4? :)
  4. Good point. I was thinking I have to get it done by then. They have also offered her a tutor a couple days a week once the school year starts.
  5. Here is the backstory, I have a child who has always struggled with math. She is in high school and has always been homeschooled up to this point. Next year she will be participating in a homeschool program at our local Christian school. We had a meeting with them today to have placement testing and to hand in transcript of the work she's completed so far. I knew she would not do well on the placement testing for math because it is an area that she struggles greatly with. In order for her to graduate on time she will need to complete three years of math in a two year time span. Algebra one algebra two and geometry. She's honestly about a sixth or seventh grade level in math at this point and she will need to get up to grade level by the fall. The reason we joined the program was for her to have opportunities to play sports and go on trips with the school. But one of the requirements to participate in the program is that all of our academics are monitored by the school and they will issue us a legal diploma at the end of that her senior year. As expected she failed the math portion of the placement testing miserably. But I recently started working with her at home and I have seen some progress. In the past she has largely worked on her own and has made progress, but she had fallen so far behind years ago that she just hasn't been able to catch up. Normally the school charges $600 a year for classes and we had decided that she wasn't going to take any for that reason. But after her placement testing today the principal decided that he wanted to offer her a full scholarship in order for her to come in and take the class algebra one for free. He is completely aware of her struggles in math, and hopes that being in a classroom with their math teacher will help her to progress. I really think this is an incredible opportunity and one that I could not have afforded on my own. I couldn't even afford to hire a tutor long-term. So now I have from tomorrow until August 22 to do everything I possibly can to help prepare her for algebra one. If anyone has any ideas to how we can start from fractions and move our way forward learning pre-algebra concepts as quickly and efficiently as possible I would be very grateful. I would also like advice on what to really focus on to make sure she has it down the most. I realize all of it's important but if I had to really focus in on certain areas that would help prepare her what would they be? Also, how would you handle this if this were your child? What would you do to get them ready for this class? As far as her accomplishing algebra two and geometry. We will probably begin working throughout ext summer and into the next school year. If the opportunity arises for her to continue algebra two at the school then she will be doing geometry as part of her homeschool curriculum.

  7. We are in our 6th year with HOD. My oldest daughter will be using the new guide coming out and my 8th grade daughter will be using Rev-Rev. I am using Sonlight with my younger two. :)
  8. Home Art Studio was wonderful for my kids this past year.
  9. My environmental science teacher said the Great Lakes area (where I live) will be pretty unaffected compared to the rest of the world. We have abundant fresh water. However after last Winterggedon, I can't say I am sure about this.
  10. I am not actually interested in meeting someone now. I am just thinking ahead. :) I am a planner. I really like being single right now and would like to stay this way until I finish college in 3 years. I just didn't know how it was done these days.
  11. I love everyones thoughts! It does give me hope. Thanks for that site also as I am reformed. :)
  12. I think everyone advice has been very helpful and when the time comes for me to get serious about this I might just come here and ask if any of you know someone you could set me up with! lol I've been here for a long time and I trust all of you more than I do a lot of people in real life! ;) That said thank you for the wonderful advice, I feel really encouraged. I will probably go to the Internet route, get involved in community organizations, and ask my friends if they know of anybody when the time is right.
  13. No, not at all! I think he is insane for getting married this fast. I guess it came across wrong the way I typed it. He and I talk a lot and I have tried to tell him he needs to slow down and get to know her first but he has never listened to me before, and he isn't starting now. What you and others have said is actually where I'm at right now. I'm not really interested in dating anyone because not only am I busy with college and homeschooling, I really am just wanting to continue to heal. Even though I just got divorced in February I have been living on my own now for three years so I'm feeling pretty good. I actually really like being single. There are just some times when I wish that I had someone but it's rare. My only concern is about not having someone in the future as my kids get older and financially is really hard to get by. My goal of college however is not only to have a career of some sort but also to financially completely support myself independently for the first time. It's just I have three years left of school. My real goal is to finish college and have my kids feel little bit older so I really won't be looking to really date until then in about three years. It's just something that I wonder about. How is it done at my age? It would seem that I don't get asked out right now so it must be something specific you have to do. I'm starting to think everyone is right that I'll need to go onto the Internet to find someone. Michelle
  14. As some of you may remember I have had quite a rough last few years with my marriage. Last Feb. our divorce was finalized. Now my ex found some woman on Christian mingle and is engaged (after only 2 months of knowing her). Up until this point, I haven't even thought about meeting anyone. I am a full time college student, homeschooling 4 kids still, and working a part-time job. As it is, I haven't seen anyone that I could even consider getting to know. I wouldn't date just anyone and I am not even sure that anyone I would want to date exists that would want to date someone with 5 kids. I don't drink, so the bar scene is out. I go to a large church but I haven't met anyone that was single. Our church doesn't have any sort of singles ministry for my age group. If you or someone you know, (Christians) have successfully found someone, how did it happen? I haven't been single in 20 years so I have no idea what to do. I am in no way rushed, and unless someone really amazing came along, I will continue to live single. I am not interested in dating around at all. I have responsibilities here, but I'd like to at least expose myself to meeting some people to see what could happen.
  15. Oh that is good to know. Generally in our house, we set the food up in the kitchen and people serve themselves then sit down. So it will be up to her what she takes and if she wants seconds or not. She is a thin, healthy looking girls so I think she will fit right in. We don't eat a ton in our house so I was concerned that might be a problem. Sometimes when we have guests or we have stayed with others, we are surprised how much people eat and snack. Even in America we all eat so different! We aren't snackers in my house and we generally have smallish meals. I love cheese and that is usually on the menu everyday. I also am a bit of a bread snob. There is a local store that makes it in house and that is really the only bread I like.
  16. I'm looking for movies to supplement Sonlight's Core D - Intro to American History. I'm in college and my youngest one isn't reading very well yet and I was thinking if he could watch some short video's and movies to supplement Sonlight while I'm in class in the mornings it would give him something to do that is History related. Anyone know of a list already put together for me? :)
  17. I seem to eat like the French. The kids usually have some sort of pancakes, or toast/jam, bagel/cream cheese for breakfast. Lunch tends to be our biggest meal of the day with yogurt and fruit for dessert. We also tend to have a light afternoon snack and a later dinner. We do eat pizza and hamburgers sometimes, but it isn't on the menu a lot. The kids love it when I make Fettucini Alfredo. Last night we grilled garlic lemon chicken, corn on the cob and watermelon. I am also pretty picky about the freshness of my food. lol Thanks for all the advice everyone!
  18. Elizabeth, I know this thread is old, but in regards to my oldest daughter, I wanted to ask you if you could give me more details how you managed to do one whole book in one semester? How much time is devoted to this subject? Also, do you add in any additional Language Arts? Thanks for any feedback you can give me.
  19. Until yesterday, I had no idea we would be hosting a 17 year old French girl in our home for 3 weeks starting July 11th. Host families were needed and we stepped up to the bat, but I have NEVER done anything like this in my life. We are supposed to just treat her like the family so she can get the American experience, but I would still like to understand her way of doing things to make her more comfortable. Mostly, I am wondering how they eat. How many times a day, what kinds of foods, etc... I just want to know what she is used to so that I can plan a menu that will still be American without making her miserable. Any advice even if it isn't food related will be very much appreciated!
  20. The last one I listed for you is an American bike company and they mail the bikes.
