  1. Since the dictation comes built into the program, I would just give it a shot adding it in. If it seems like too much, drop it. You won't lose anything doing that. If you have a writing program you like, stick with it. HOD kinda jumps around in this regard, using all sorts of different programs every year. I would go with what is already working for you. Hardly anyone does DITHOR, lol. No, you are not sabotaging your efforts. HOD has a lot to offer with everything else. We have used HOD for 5 years and always do our own L/A and Math. I wouldn't run three guides unless you plan to have the older ones work independently. I do this but they worked their way into it. Next year I am making a "teacher checklist" that gives me a quick rundown what the older kids are doing everyday so I can check up on them without digging through the TM. It lists their independent work that I can check if I want and also stuff we should do together. It looks like this:
  2. Thanks so much! I will pass this info to my daughter and let her make heads or tails of it. lol And, no, I typed that word incorrectly. I actually realized I did when I was rereading it, but I didn't feel like fixing it. lol
  3. My daughter has a final coming up tomorrow and their are a few problems she doesn't understand on her practice test. If anyone would mind taking the time to thoroughly solve and explain these, she would be very grateful!!! 1. (Using the graph) What is the greatest range of speed for a roller coaster in this data set? 2. An internet site compares the strokes per round of two professional golfers: Jeff with a mean of 71.5 strokes and standard deviation of 2.3 strokes vs. Matt who has a mean of 70.1 strokes and standard deviation of 1.2 strokes. What is the coefficient of variation for each golfer? PUt Jeff's CV on the top line and Matt's CV on the bottom line. (Round to one decimal place) 3. Using the previous question, which golfer has more variation in golf strokes 4. Which is NOT true about Normal Distribution? a. bell-shaped b. symmetric with respect to standard diviation c. total area under the curve = 1 d. 50% of data is below the mean 5. SHORT Answer: Assume that a normal distribution of data has a mean of 13 and standard deviation of 2. Use the 68-95-99.7 rule to find the percentage of values that lie below 17. 6. SHORT Answer: Assume that math test scores are normally distributed with a mean of 300 and standard deviation of 60. If you scored 240 on this practice exam, what percentage of those taking the test scored below you?
  4. I know of a lot of Charlotte Mason sites on the web (Simply Charlotte Mason, Ambleside, Charlotte Mason Help) but I am sure there are some I am unaware of. I feel a strong need to connect to all things CM. So what are the best CM forums, blogs, general websites? Thanks!!!
  5. I am thinking along the lines of Charlotte Mason's "List of Attainments" as a sort of basis for making this list. I have had a very busy college (me), homeschool (them) year and I need to regroup over the summer and get some good habits into place. I am looking to brainstorm a list for my kids, but I am open to making a list for other ages and posting it somewhere (my blog?) for others to use. Anyhow, here is a beginning example of what I am thinking. Get creative, it doesn't have to be inside the realm of normal. :) 8 year old (boy) Make Bed Get Dressed Make simple breakfast (toast, cereal, sandwich) (Work on additional breakfasts) Brush Teeth Brush Hair Feed Dog
  6. Yes, I know some charter schools in Ohio use Calvert for instance. It also looks like Sonlight is gearing up to be used this way with their new secular Sonlight.
  7. Is Oak Meadow used as a curriculum in any state funded online charter schools?
  8. Yes, we have done every guide since CTC. I just get nervous each year spending so much and being unfamiliar with the books.
  9. I know, I struggle with this every year. The high school guides have been a good fit for my daughter, but the price is higher than anything out there. Also, I haven't heard of a lot of these books and I wonder if they are good or even high school level.
  10. Here are some options for you... Preplanned but flexible - Living Books Curriculum Lit based - Sonlight More planning, but fun if you like that! http://www.charlottemasonhelp.com/ http://materamabilis.org/ma/ amblesideonline.org
  11. I am curious what people think of the new high school guide coming out? All the different subjects are listed here: http://www.heartofdakota.com/board3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=14776 I am especially curious what people's thoughts are on the literature? They include: Ben Hur Julius Caesar Pearl Maiden King Arthur and His Knights A Man for All Seasons The Scarlet Pimpernal The Count of Monte Cristo Les Miserables Animal Farm The Celestial Railroad I also have a list of books that will be used in their "living literature" portion of the program. This is in addition to the regular lit. I would love honest thoughts and such on all this. Here are the extra lit books: The Hero Schliemann - The Dreamer Who Dug for Troy Cyrus the Persian A Sparrow Alone The Silas Diary Spring Tide The Lantern Bearers Son of Charlemagne The Kings Shadow The Magna Charta Joan of Arc Luther the Leader Caught in the Web Johannes Kepler Stronger Than the Sword In Search of Honor Patriots Daughter John Newton Audio Drama Lillian Trasher Between the Sword and the Wall - A Novel of WWI Bonhoeffer - The Cost of Freedom Audio Drama Basher Five-Two - The True Story of F-16 Fighter Pilot Captain Scott O'Grady It looks like if you go with the whole program, it would be around $1500.
  12. Anyone have this typed up with a chapters that correspond between CTC and MOH?
  13. I want to do a "free" health class for my daughter using library books websites Documentaries project ideas ...for next year. I would love help coming up with topics and materials to go along with those topics. I will probably look into a few outside courses, such as getting her certified in CPR or maybe babysitting training by the Red Cross. Any additional ideas?
  14. I'm thinking I need something chocolate. Here is what I usually make for family gatherings. I double it for a 9x13 pan. http://sweettreatsmore.com/2010/04/peaches-cream-cheesecake/
  15. OK, these sound yummy! I am especially drawn to the Strawberry Cream Puff Cake!
  16. I need to make 2 desserts for tomorrows dinner and I like to try new things. Any recipes you have tried and LOVE or something you have been wanting to try? Please provide links! Thanks!!!
  17. I was strongly considering it myself but then I decided to go with Bible Study Guide for All Ages. I am using CLE Math, L/A & Reading next year so I didn't want to do workbook overkill.
  18. INTJ here. You have strong preference of Introversion over Extraversion (78%) You have slight preference of Intuition over Sensing (12%) You have moderate preference of Thinking over Feeling (38%) You have slight preference of Judging over Perceiving (22%)
  19. My email account is sending out viruses daily for about a week now. I changed my password but I don't know what else to do. I have had this account for 9 years. I don't really want to close it. Any suggestions?
  20. My daughter will be in 11th grade next year and she really is a good speller, reader and decent writer. She naturally uses correct grammar and usage when she writes. My only concern is with her knowing the terms and being able to score well on the ACT starting next year. She hasn't really done a lot of grammar, but like I said, she reads a ton of books. She has done Heart of Dakota at their highest level for the last 5 years. The thing is, she has hated Rod and Staff and never really gets through it. Well, its my fault I didn't make it happen, but now I feel like I need to do something before we get any further. She is not a quick learner, more of a steady goes it kind of girl so I don't want anything that is going to make her head spin. I really just want something that is easy to implement as she works best on her own. Is their anything out there that will hold her hand and teach her the material she needs without expecting that she has a ton of diagramming, finding antecedents, etc...? I will be in college next year full time, (as I was this year) and it really does need to be fairly independent. We have 2 years to get this done. Any advice?
