  1. I wanted to share a movie I made with my daughters, a few of their friends and a girl we hosted from France in July. She saw a few of the movies we had made in the past and loved watching them. So I asked her if she would like to be in a movie we made and she loved the idea. So we got busy brainstorming ideas and came up with this. It is our largest project to date. It involved a week of planning, 5 hours writing the script and planning filming sequences, and costumes, hair and makeup for 8 people including props. The day of filming was an all day adventure driving all around our city to our Art Museum, Main Library, The University and Botanical Gardens. Editing was at least 14 hours if not more. I think it turned out really well. We don't have the equipment to really make it over the top, but I will be getting that next summer. In the meantime, I would love your comments. This fall I am taking film-making at my University that I attend. MY ULTIMATE GOAL once I graduate is to make educational films for homeschoolers so look for that in the future!
  2. Ok, I have decided after looking it over ALL DAY LONG... I am going to go with Guest Hollow's program. I really like that it has more non-fiction and I feel freer... lighter with it. With Sonlight I just know I'll feel like I have to do everything. To me, it looks like GH's program covers the topics more in depth and focused.
  3. Hey, I just found this Educational American History Movie list! http://www.wpunj.edu/dotAsset/189153.pdf
  4. My problem is I worry about lining my resources up correctly. I don't want to put an activity or book somewhere it doesn't belong. I wish Sonlight had an actual table of contents so I could know the content of each week without having to read deep into the instructors notes. Guest Hollow has a great "topics" list so I know what is covered.
  5. Thank You!!! I need some thoughts from others and this is very helpful. I am realizing that Sonlight is mostly fiction as well. Have you actually used Guest Hollow?
  6. Ok 73 views, 4 votes which make my poll 50/50 and zero comments. Pretty please... :) I need advise peeps!
  7. Would you choose GuestHollow's American History I or Sonlight Core D: Introduction to American History? Just to clarify, a few points: This would be for my 8 year old son & my 11 year old daughter combined. My son is still learning to read, so he wouldn't be reading a lot on his own. They both like hands-on activities I'll be in college full-time but I'll have afternoons to work with them. This isn't a money thing. I have a lot of the books in both programs and an excellent library system. I even have an old edition of Sonlight Core D from 2001. I am drawn to Sonlight because I know the program is systematic and tested. But in some ways, it looks like it could be boring. I keep trying to add movies, websites and activities to it, but I get overwhelmed trying to match it up and I worry that it could be overwhelming trying to do all the reading and additional activities. I am drawn to Guesthollow because it looks like it could be multi-age friendlier, more of a variety of levels of books to choose from and tons of activies to choose from all nicely organized by weeks. I am concerned however that since it is a free program, it may have issues with flow or content. It could be overwhelming tracking down the extra resources and adding them in. But it looks like it could be wonderful if I allow myself to just go with it. I also only want to do history 4 days a week. I would be grateful for your thoughts and comments.
  8. I am visiting Brunswick, Ohio today to drop one of my daughters off at an event that doesn't start till 7pm tonight. My 14 year old daughter and I can't stay at the location with older dd so we need to find things to do and places to eat. I love thrift stores, historical sites, museums etc... any suggestions? I am willing to travel around the area a bit. Medina, OH is located nearby also. Thanks!
  9. I have seen starfall, and it looks like it could work possibly, but I'd like some ideas on how to use it best. When I have given him free reign on it, he just sort of pops all over the site. I want to give my son specific directions on how to use it each day. I wish there was some sort of lesson plan or directions.
  10. I feel like this is a good idea, but maybe too easy for him? I would like to find something a bit more challenging. I love the idea of games however.
  11. I need some independent work my son can work on while I am in college during the morning hours this fall. I am specifically looking for something to help him with learning to read. He is amazing at Math, but reading has been his downfall. He is an Emergent Reader about 1st grade level. I am going to be working with him in the afternoons, but I need something that he can really watch, play or work on while I'm gone. Something that will be like a little "reading workshop" to reinforce what I'll be teaching him. Any ideas?
  12. Princess Academy is located in this kingdom. It is a funny story with a broken fairy who is good but can cast only broken spells. The girls meet a prince and it goes downhill from there.
  13. We are working on our movie and need a name for the royal kingdom. I am open to anything. We also have a Princess Academy in this kingdom if that helps you to be creative. Any ideas? :)
  14. Both my daughter and I will be going back to college this fall and I am trying to decide between a backpack or messenger bag. I will be carrying my Mac-Book Air in addition to a book or two, and she will have her iPad in addition to a book or two. I will be riding my bike 2 days a week 3 miles each way so that should come into play. Please link to favorite brands or recommendations. Thanks!
  15. I have homeschooled here for 9 years without a bit of trouble. Easy peasy! I even graduated my oldest and she is attending an Ohio University on full scholarship with no issues.
  16. TTD is coming to Sandusky? That is only an hour away from my house! Awesome!! Can you add me to the facebook list Elisabeth? I'll pm you my full name.
  17. No strong advice, but I love this tool: https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/compare-colleges
  18. I think Tapestry of Grace is what you would want.
  19. We are nearing the end of a 3 week program that had us hosting a wonderful 17 year old girl from France. The kids and I have all grown to love her and are so sad that she will be leaving us. Hosting her was not something I had planned for and in fact we signed up to do it just 10 days before she arrived. It has all been such unexpected blessing and I hope we also were to her as her own mother passed away about a year ago of cancer. I want to do something or give her something before she goes back to her life in France but I just don't know what. I don't even know if we will ever see her again which breaks my heart. Anyhow, I need some ideas.
  20. Well... I have been told I'm 1/16 Sioux. lol
