  1. I am going to be buying for my 9th grade daughter soon and need suggestions. I am a full time student so I am looking for independence in nearly everything. I would also like suggestions for her as a college bound, science loving kid. She also plans on taking French for two years at least. Thanks!
  2. I have dieted a lot over the years and it wasn't until last year that I found what works for me. Cut out anything made with flour Cut out all refined sugar (even the kind hidden in stuff like peanut butter) Limit high sugar fruits (like bananas) Limit other sugar substitutes (like honey) Cut white potatoes & corn Drink water, tea (with truvia) Sounds hard but it was so easy. Here is what I did add in... Good protein breakfast. Usually 2 scrambled eggs. Good protein lunch. Typical could be chicken salad on a bed of greens. Healthy fast food. Chipotle!!! Brown Rice, Fajita Veggies, Steak, Tomato Salsa, Cheese, Sour Cream and lettuce. Lots of Dairy (except milk) No limit on fats Favorite meats (like steak and baked chicken) Unlimited Veggies cooked however I want. (butter... Cheese... etc) Lara Bars (no sugar varieties) Exercised 3x a week. Usually running. I lost 30 lbs. Went from a tight size 14 to a size 8, 167-137 lbs. I am 5'8 inches tall. Right now I am in maintenance phase. I allow myself some things on the banned list but in moderation. I check my weight regularly and if I feel fat or chubby, I cut back. I am in the process of toning for summer so I am lifting weights now. I will start running again in a few weeks when the weather breaks.
  3. I am looking for a well laid out program for my daughters next year, grades 6 and 9. Here are my requirements... Not too expensive. $150 max for both girls. I have access to a library. Literature Rich Independent (This is a must as I am in college full time) Some sort of comprehension questions or something that I can check in with them to see that they are doing their work and learning. Grade level appropriate EASY to implement
  4. What are some good sources of literature that are not tied to history? All the history curricula has literature scheduled in but it is always tied into the history. I would like to find something that lists literature for different age levels with comprehension questions. I like Progeny Press, but it is too expensive to purchase each individual guide. I'd like to find something that has a lot of choices with comprehension questions.
  5. We are coming into town for a visit to the American Girl Doll store and will be staying the night. We need to plan some fun and extremely low cost things to do tomorrow (Sunday) and Monday. Ages 8-20. Any suggestions?
  6. I was thinking pot roast, but I also like the idea of a steak & baked potatoes. I haven't really made a lot of soup in my day so I don't think I'll tackle that. Thanks so much!
  7. So I have been single for 3 years and planned to stay that way but God had other plans and brought a really great guy into my life recently. We have been seeing each other for a little bit now and tomorrow he is going to church with me and then back to my house for lunch. The kids are going to a pumpkin patch with their dad so it will be just us. Anyhow, I want to make him something home cooked since he has been living the bachelor life for the last 2 1/2 years but I can't think what to make! I am a pretty good cook but I want to keep it homestyle and not really gourmet. Any ideas? Links to recipes? I guess I'll need dessert also. Oh, and it has to be something I can eat also as a low-carb eater.
  8. Thank You Caroline! I completely understand what you wrote out for me. My daughter is taking Algebra I at a local school and I am trying to help her but math is soooo not my subject. Thanks so so much again everyone!
  9. Can you do these two also. We are studying for an exam on Monday and these are the sample problems. (5/6)(-2/3) I don't know what to do with these fractions. 5/6 ÷ (-2/3) Still don't know what to do with the fractions.
  10. OK, can you teach me how to multiply the fraction ? I feel awful I don't know how to do this.
  11. I am terrible at fractions. We need to solve this using Distributive Property. Please list everything you do. Thanks for the help! 3/5 (15t - 2)
  12. Also remember there is a difference between the Amish and Mennonites. You'll likely find many homeschooling Mennonites but very few homeschooling Amish. The Mennonites tend to live more modern lives, choosing more of their own path and the Amish live old world style following strict guidelines from their Bishops and Ordnung.
  13. I am taking 15 credit hours this fall along with full-time homeschooling and I need help balancing and knowing how to keep track of my assignments. I need tips, tricks and good old plain advice. I already missed some points in one of my classes because I failed to post a discussion on our blackboard assignment. Two of my classes are project heavy and another two are writing heavy so I really need help here. Any suggestions?
  14. When I was a kid, I loved: Escape to Witch Mountain 1975 version Heidi (Shirley Temple)
  15. Ahh memories! I was at Veg Source for a long time. I had forgotten all that.
  16. It probably went in about 1/2 inch. It didn't bleed a lot. It went through a flip flop first and I flung my foot as soon as I felt it and it pulled out. It only bled a little. It is sore now.
  17. Blood poisoning????? What am I supposed to do about that? I washed it immediately in hydrogen peroxide. Any other thoughts?
  18. Oh really? I had no idea. So would you just sit on it and keep an eye out for symptoms?
  19. I have never had a tetanus shot before. The nail was not rusty and was in my wall just minutes before I stepped on it. Can I wait till the morning to go get the shot?
  20. Since there is so much CLE love going on, I thought I would share something I started this year that has really helped me. I am in college every day till after lunch. What I have been doing is pre-teaching the day before so the kids can work independently the next day. So it looks like this: Day 1 - Teach Ls. 1 - Go through the new material thoroughly then quickly go through the rest of the lesson, explaining each section where it is needed. Put book away. Day 2 - MORNING - Child gets started on math independently till done. Day 2 - AFTERNOON - Check Ls. 1 and fix any problems that were done incorrectly. Teach Ls. 2 same as day before. Day 3 - Repeat Day 2. This has really saved me a ton of time. Now I don't have to wait for my kids to work through their lessons each day. I also have given them the review they needed the day before so they should have the correct answers when we check it later.
