Good morning, all! Welcome to the Lounge!

Today's theme stems from the fact that I was just thinking, even though I've only just been awake for maybe

a half an hour, I still feel like I could use a L o o o o n n n g nap! Which, of course, brought to mind the stanza

from The Night Before Christmas:

"With ma in her kerchief and I in my cap, we both settled down for a long winter's nap."

That nap sounds LOVELY right about now.

Who else is in need of some more sufficient sleep? Here: ME! Although, I'm pretty sure I was asleep around 10pm last

night and didn't wake up until close to 8am this morning. And, no, I didn't take a TylenolPm or any sort of sleep aid. Once

I was in my bed, it's like my body knew it was time to sleep!

Who has an event coming up tonight that still has details that need to be finalized? Here:  :seeya:

What are some of YOUR favorite, or maybe just most-memorized, childhood stories/books/fairy tales? Here: The Night Before Christmas

I think is permanently ingrained into my brain. I also read Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends from cover to cover, repeatedly.

Who's looking forward to sweatshirt/sweater weather? Here: ME!

Talk to me! :bigear:

There is not enough coffee for this. I really slept poorly last night which seems to be a thing now that I am seriously peri-menopausal.

I can't think of anything else.

Oh except that ds's girlfriend is coming over tonight so I should figure out what to make for supper.

Afternoon, Scrap!

I've been having sleep issues recently.  I finally realized I had been on kid duty for the past week and hadn't gone out to get my usual exercise.  I did a 2 mile run yesterday and slept fantastically. :)  I had been waking up groggy and feeling tired all day.  Now I'm just fine.  I do think a good portion of the world has the right idea with a rest period in the afternoon, though.  It's a nice break in the day.

I have no events coming up, and I think my most-committed-to-memory books are ones I've read to my children: Goodnight Moon, Where The Wild Things Are..and of course, The Night Before Christmas.  And after 14 years of reading it annually, we can all quote A Christmas Carol rather accurately.  :001_smile:

FaithManor, have you tried drinking a tea with valerian root and/or chamomile and/or hops and/or passionflower? All of those should help you sleep peacefully.

Or have you tried putting lavender essential oil on the bottoms of your feet? That works wonderfully for some folk, as well. Just some suggestions from this

aspiring herbalist.  ;) YMMV

HomeAgain, where are you that it is afternoon already? Also, I second the mid-afternoon siesta!

I have not tied valerian root. Melatonin and I do not get along. I was unaware that there was another herbal option. Thanks for the heads up. Ds has been having a lot of issues with restlessness due to his leg. They gave him melatonin in the hospital to help him sleep and he head nightmares! He also reacts strongly to benadryl so if he takes a Tylenol PM at 9 pm he feels drugged until 10 am or so the next day which is not great when he has classes. We will give the valerian root a try.

I have some floral allergies so can't do lavender oil unless I want to stuff up and have a headache.

FaithManor, how old is your ds? When I told my herbal instructor I was giving melatonin to my then-12yo, he said "DON'T" as melatonin is a hormone.

In place of that, for still-developing folk, he recommends avenia sativa (wild oats) OR nettle (some people do have reactions to this one but not all).

He also recommends trying ONE herb at a time to see how it affects you. Again, YMMV.

As for you and lavender, you can always try frankincense for the same effect but it is about 3 times the cost of lavender. Maybe go with the tea/herbs first.

Keep frankincense on hand for the really trying nights and use it only at those times.

(yeah, I use TylenolPM very rarely as I have the same reaction as your son. Although lately, if I use it, I'm fine in the morning, but by mid-afternoon my

normal low energy time has increased three fold! Best to just not take it if you don't have to!)

I'll take some sleep as well, please. The baby is sleeping through the night now, which is great. The trouble really is my own self discipline; I never want to go to bed ontime and just want to keep doing whatever it is I'm doing. Once I go to bed I fall asleep like a rock, though. I've tried warm milk the past 3 nights before bed. I don't know if it's an old wives tale or not, but I like the taste at least, and the bribery of having it to drink has worked to get me to bed. I've tried herbal teas in the past (tulsi tea was highly recommended to me), but they don't seem to affect my sleepiness levels. Do they really work for people?

Does the Princess Bride count as a childhood story? lol I read tons as a kid but never really memorized. The Princess Bride, on the other hand, I had line for line by the time I was in kindergarten.

By the way, Scrap, love how you decorated the Lounge today, very festively Christmas in July vibe :)

I'm dragging, too. I've been meaning to go to bed at a reasonable hour, but keep getting sidetracked. Last night, I remembered that I have a talk coming up at a homeschool fair and, in a panic, thought it was much sooner than it was. But I started brainstorming ideas for the talk (on homeschooling high school - not bones cooling as autocorrect deemed appropriate ) and I just couldnt put it down and relax enough to sleep. I also am not getting enough exercise since dd is on hiatus from rock climbing team training which means I am not at the gym as much as I should be.

Event tonight? It is dh and my 26th anniversary and we haven't made dinner plans yet. I haven't picked up the house nor have I found the card I bought a while back. Over the years, i have accumulated a few dozen cards I have purchased for one occasion or another and then forgotten about. No gifts this year other than dinner because all h-e-doublehockeysticks has messed with our cash flow (ahem ... broken fridge.

From my childhood

.. I adored the Little House books, reading them over and over again. I also have fond memories of listening to our teacher read James and the Giant Peach and A Wrinkle in Time when we couldn't go out for recess. I credit her for making me the voracious reader that I grew up to be. For my kids, I loved reading Shel Silverstein, Goodnight Moon, Where the Wild Things Are, the Knight Kitchen, Owl Moon, and Owls on the Family!

Not really looking forward to sweatshirt weather ... we had several lovely "open the wi dows, it COOLER (not cooking) outside" days. We are back to hot and humid, but I may be starting a job soon ... I had an interview with a small, locally-owned tea shop that frequent. Now I am having second thoughts. But it really is a good job for retail. I love the shop and feel that I could fit in there. They treat employees well and respect your time. But dh thinks I should hold out for something " more." I just need to build up my confidence. I see myself there for about 6 months to a year.

Good afternoon!

Long day and don't have much time.

More sleep is always a good thing! No events tonight that need planning. I've still got to pack, though.

I loved the Harold and the Purple Crayon books and a wonderful book, Mr. Pine's Purple House. See a theme there? LOL! My sister took it upon herself to find me the book about the house. My favorite children's novel was Where the Red Fern Grows.

Tulsi is a good detox and overall health-benefiting tea but I wouldn't recommend it for sleeping. You'd want more valerian, hops, passionflower, chamomile, that sort of thing.

Thanks for noticing the decorations!  :coolgleamA:

More Sleep: Me! But it's my own fault.  I was up late reading.

Event Coming Up: Nothing here.

Childhood Books: Everything by Shel Silverstein.  I loved his poems.

Sweater Weather: NO!  I love the heat!

Yeah, I'm not sure you and I can be friends any more . . .  :p

Oi! Just a few more hours and I'm stressing! God give me the time I need, please!

And help me not to strangle certain people! Just got an email from a swim member's mom

who said, "I'm a bit annoyed as I've given you my personal email every year and have yet to

receive a single email from you. Please let me know what I need to do to get on that list."

She waited until TODAY to tell me this? Today is the LAST official event of THIS swim season.

Swim team started in JUNE. And if you've had kids on swim team BEFORE this summer, why did you not

tell me this LAST year or the year before that? Seriously. Aaarrggh. This really isn't MY problem, it is HERS.

So I don't know why it bugs me so much!   Steps carefully down off soapbox . . .

Now where did my Dutch Bros sanity cup of coffee go . . .?

Well, I THINK I'm done with everything for the party. Someone else is picking up the cakes, water, and ice.

I hope not too many more people show up than RSVP'd. Especially swimmers. Is that wrong?

It's just that I labeled all the medals for those that said they WOULD be there. I have more but I'd like them

to not just surprise me with, "Hi, we're here!"

I'll let you know how it goes!

I hadn't ever heard that.  I thought it was safe for kids?
