StaceyinLA Posted September 4, 2015 Share Posted September 4, 2015 The midwife told dd that the ultraonographer saw one on her baby at her 20 week anatomy scan. Nothing else looks out of the ordinary that would indicate Trisomy 18, but how worried should we be about hydrocephalus? Anyone else deal with this and have positive outcomes? jelbe5 Posted September 4, 2015 Share Posted September 4, 2015 Yes, with my first. After that first ultrasound we went for a higher resolution ultrasound performed by a doctor. The cyst was no longer visible and the doctor said they can be common - some of her own unborn children had them and then they simply went away. She presented us with our options but did tell us that there is a risk of miscarriage should we have an amino. We chose not to have one. That was 20 years ago - our daughter just had her birthday and she had no problems. Wishing you and your dd all the best and sending you prayers/positive energy. We already knew she had Trisomy 18 at the scan (amnio) that found the cyst, and it was just one of many anomalies found in the scan. The doctors at the time said that it was very common, in all babies, and that it would likely resolve on its own. My niece was hydrocephalic (unknown reason) and had a shunt put in when she was a few months old after the condition was discovered. It wasn't discovered early enough and she has brain damage in the area. I am glad they know to watch for potential problems for your g-baby. My niece has definite delays due to the specific area that was damaged. Sorry, not good news in my family. We were scared the first time and chose to get a higher level ultrasound but nothing additional was found and she was born perfectly healthy. The next two times, we didn't get any addtl evaluations and both dd's were fine. So for us, there was no correlation between the cysts and any abnormalities. Wishing the best for your dd & grandbaby! Our oldest DD (13 now) had a visible one at her 20-week scan. I was terrified and did tons of research, and based on what I learned, this was the bottom line. A choroid plexus cyst on its own, absent several other important markers, rarely means anything and usually disappears by later scans. It's still frightening though :( Big :grouphug: to your DD. Peacepipe Posted September 5, 2015 Share Posted September 5, 2015 My now 16yo ds had a large cyst found on his 20wk u/s. We were given a 5% chance that he had Trisomy 18, which seemed like overwhelming odds at the time. We didn't have an amnio, but did have two additional ultrasounds to check on his development. He was a healthy baby, and has had no issues. I also have 2 nephews whose ultrasounds showed the cysts, and they are fine, as well. I hope your daughter has a similar experience. Peace. I have a friend who was pregnant at about the same time - same story, diagnosed at 20 weeks, absorbed, totally happy and healthy kid. This. One of mine had a CPC. They referred me out for a very detailed ultrasound to look for any evidence of other abnormalities and didn't find any. My memory is something like 3% or more of scans have an isolated CPC and as a single isolated finding it is generally not a big deal. Multiple cysts or a CPC plus other issues are much more worrisome. Also, they often resolve on their own but that doesn't seem to have much to do with outcome; rather the presence of the cyst is a marker for underlying chromosomal abnormality. They just plan to look again in a month or so. Thank you for all of the replies thus far. Has she considered Panorama or a similar advanced bloodtest screening? That is relatively recent but apparently quite helpful in finding chromosomal issues. Safer than an amnio. Mommy22alyns Posted September 6, 2015 Share Posted September 6, 2015 Since Katie mentioned blood tests, we did go ahead and squeeze in whatever blood test they offered back in 2004 after that 20 week u/s (I was also diagnosed with complete placenta previa, so we were pretty scared) and it was clear.
