What do you do....

Recommended Posts

What do you do when your child gives you "nonsense answers" during school? When I am speaking about "nonsense answers" I mean, you teach a concept 3-4 times and they give you a wrong answer just to get your attention or mess with you. BTW, I can tell the difference with my ds between generally not understanding the concept and just "messing with me." He usually confesses. I really do not understand why he does this.

If it happens more than once or twice, I would say, "Uh-oh... seems like you need to stop and ___________ (get some exercise, do some jumping jacks, anything that gets him moving, but not playing toys) and then come back and try again because you aren't trying right now." Then, if it continues, repeat, letting him know that he is not going to have much play time or whatever, because he is needing so many breaks and you sure hope he will start to try so that the lesson can be finished...

Just an idea...

My DD (6) does this sometimes too. Not always intentionally, sometimes she has something on her mind that she just *really* wants to get out. If it's a case of her having something she wants to spit out that's unrelated to the topic at hand, I tell her when she can tell me (i.e. later) and ask her the question again. If she's goofing off then I give her no reaction. I just quietly stare at her, and then she usually gives me the correct answer (or an honest attempt at a correct answer).

If he's doing it to get a reaction, don't give him a reaction.

If this were an older child, I would respond: oh no, the video games/computer games/texting must be killing your brain cells, no more of them for awhile! You can take up sweeping to fill your free time.

But with a 5 year old I am not sure... is it possible he's getting too much seat time, not enough fun or active time?

My 4 year old has been doing this for a while. He thinks it's hysterical to give the wrong answer, especially if it's a computer game that makes a silly sound when you answer wrong. He'll do things just fine, until he has the answers memorized, and then he gives every wrong answer in a multiple choice option :glare: That's when I know he know it and is bored and it's time to learn something new. When he does it when I'm verbally quizzing him, he answers "Is it xyz?...Nooo, that's too silly!" and goes on until he realizes he's not getting a reaction, and then he answers right, which does get a good reaction. That's what I do. I don't give him the satisfaction of a frustrated response, when I know he's just being silly, and really knows the answer.
