JudoMom
How would you write the above? I'm making a volunteer chart for my Judo club, and one of the slots is "Clean [boys'/Boy's or Girls'/Girl's] Bathroom". Help.
Ria
If the bathroom belongs to one boy, it's boy's (the bathroom belonging to the boy). If the bathroom belongs to more than one boy, it's boys' (the bathroom belonging to the boys). Same with girls. Ria

Hillary in KS
How about "Men" and "Women", sidestepping the whole problem? :)
Tree House Academy
Girls' bathroom/Boys' bathroom (unless it belongs to just one girl/boy). Edited March 2, 2009 by Tree House Academy

And then I couldn't remember how I'd see it written. And then I thought I might be crazy. And then I came here.
JudoMom
How about "Men" and "Women", sidestepping the whole problem? :) Because the majority of people who use this bathroom are younger than 18 (it's in the youth portion of a church) :001_smile:. SnowWhite
If you aren't putting the word bathroom after it, it would be perfectly acceptable to simply write Boys (as in: Boys, go in here) and Girls (as in: Girls, go in here). Ria is correct about the usage, though.

Ellie
How about "Men" and "Women", sidestepping the whole problem? :) Except in my local airport, where the restroom signs are "Womens" and "Mens." :glare:
KatieJ
If I recall this rule correctly, it is: First you make it plural and then you make it possessive.
fivetails
I've never seen a washroom with the apostrophe - they just say "BOYS" and "GIRLS" on them...which has me thinking now, do the bathrooms actually *belong* to anyone? (Other than the owner of the building, of course) ....So perhaps if those are the NAMES of the bathrooms (pretend it's BLUE bathroom, PINK bathroom....but we have BOYS bathroom and GIRLS bathroom)...then they wouldn't need apostrophes... I'd prolly take the instructions and write - using caps to denote the NAME - "Clean the BOYS and GIRLS bathrooms" ....but it could quite likely be totally wrong LOL ..... Or just "Clean both bathrooms" :D
