Have her check out Garden of Wisdom. They sell tons of natural products that can be used in skin-care (like oils, antioxidants, etc.) and they have a forum with lots of helpful women who are great at giving recommendations. They also sell ready-made products that sometimes include non-natural ingredients like preservatives, but not the nasty kinds like parabens that often cause reactions. I have found their prices to very reasonable compared to similar, popular brands. Here is their website:

One other place I like to shop that has a similar setup but without the forum is Mountain Rose Herbs.

Both places have had great customer service.

HTH!

Edited to add: I just noticed that she is open to making her own products with recipes. If so, she should definitely check out these places since they sell the ingredients that she would need. The ladies at the GoW forum would be able to help her with recipes too.

I am not easily impressed by cosmetic company claims and tend to be skeptical. That being said...

I started using Avalon Organics Revitalizing Eye Gel and am extremely impressed at the improvement I've seen in the skin around my 48 year old eyes. It is very mild, not irritating at all, and you only use a tiny amount. I would definitely try other products by this company.

There are a number of ways to get away from using commercial stuff. Unfortunately, many of the commercial products - even more natural ones - contain preservatives. And, frankly, "natural" does not translate to non-allergenic, even when the most likely offenders aren't used.

I highly recommend Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Healing for Women and The Family Herbal. She has great skin care recipes that you can make and tweak for your own needs.

There is also a Yahoo group called "no poo" (that's shampoo) for support, ideas and discussion about natural alternatives in personal care. :001_smile:

I've been very happy with Garden of Wisdom, too - and the ladies on the forum are very helpful and could probably help your friend narrow down what exactly is causing her reactions and give her good recommendations.

And I've been using shampoo bars for a couple years from Chagrin Valley:

She makes a lot of different soaps and shampoo bars.
