Lovedtodeath
Think it will work?? Make history go faster, or slower? It was just an idea. I haven't seen anything of these theme-based writing units. I just thought I would throw it out there for reactions.
Jen500
This is what I'm planning on doing (after we finish Wordsmith Apprentice). My boys are really interested in U.S. history, so we're going to use IEW's US History book and expand on that for reading and activities. (I've never planned on doing TWTM's history cycles anyways, so it's not a big departure for us)
mims
Make sure you consider the recomended ages for the IEW writing curriculum. I believe the US history is geared for a junior high. It might have recomendations for several ages but it will say that on the sight.
Deece in MN
We have used the theme-based writing courses along side our history studies, but have not based our studies around the units. For example, right now we are studying world history (ds in 9th) with a focus on Middle Ages for Lit. and writing. I purchased the Medieval theme-based writing course and he is working through that the first half of the year. The program says it is for 5-8th grades, but he needs a bit more work on writing and we are moving through it at a quicker pace so I don't feel it is beneath him. We also used the first edition of the American History theme-based writing when we did some Am. History. I may have him work through the Life Science one when he does Biology, but haven't decided for sure.
skimerinkydo
My 6th grader is using the American History I theme along with SOTW3. It works pretty well alongside the pace of SOTW. I figured it was a good way to "beef up" SOTW for her.
Peela
We are just going to use the IEW Medieval writing course alongside our Ambleside/HEO based Medieval year. In other words I wont be trying to line up our reading with the writing topics in IEW- that would be too hard. We will just do both.
Lizzie in Ma
The later units in each theme based book get rather long and I didn't want to be held up.
Lovedtodeath
Aha! Very helpful. I have plenty of time to think about it. :) We are not buying anything (content) new until 4th grade.
