2023/2024 Read Aloud Picks

Recommended Posts

Every year I plan the first 10 or 12 books that I read aloud. For us, read aloud time happens at breakfast time so hands and mouths are occupied. I try and balance older kid reads with younger kid reads. Oh! And yes some of these I have read in the past to my big kids.

For the upcoming year we have Grades K, 5, 6 & 8.

1. Fantastic Mr. Fox

2. That Scatterbrain Booky

3. Odder

4. The Vanderbeekers Ever After

5. The Mouse & The Motorcycle

6. Stuart Little

7. Pippi Longstocking

8. A Song for a Whale

9. Mr. Poppers Penguins

10. Kingdom of Wrenly  #1The Lost Stone

11. The Train to Impossible Places

12. Tiger Rising

Tell me what is on your read aloud list and add your kids ages.

My kids are 11, 9, 6, 3, and baby. I'll add more as the year goes on, but right now my plan is:

Trials and Triumph (I think I'll read on Fridays)

Heidi

Little House series (it will be new for the 6 and 3yo)

Little Women

Maybe: Count of Monte Cristo-I need to review to see if there's objectionable content.

I'm going to suggest Little men, since it appears you have mostly boys? Mind you, it is a different kind of book, but perhaps a little more of interest?

We loved Count of Monte Cristo, but at older ages. There are a ton of characters and it's not terribly short either (894 pages!). Your 11 year old might follow it, but the others are probably too young. If you are planning a condensed version, just wait until they can handle the full.  There are lots of great books for this age range that would work.

Mine will be in 3rd, 4th, and 7th.

-The Toothpaste Millionaire

- Stories of Robin Hood

-Winnie’s Great War

-The Trolley Car Family

-Nim’s Island

-The Mouse with the Question Mark Tail

-The Bookwanderers

-The Green Ember (possibly)

-The Worst Christmas Pageant Ever

That’s all I’ve got for free reads so far. We will see if it’s too much or not enough once I finalize all the core books.

I’m thinking I might read The Lost Trail: Nine Days Alone in the Wilderness aloud to everyone instead of assigning it to my 4th grader.

I want to read The Train to Impossible Places aloud now too @alysee. I went to Ollie’s  yesterday and  it was there, waiting for me to buy it. 😆

I have a TBR (to be read) shelf. When it's time for the next book, I'll pull down four books and read the first page. Then kid gets to choose what to hear next. Currently on the shelf are:

A Wolf for a Spell, Sutton

The Neverending Story, Ende

A Rover's Story, Warga

Tristan Strong #1, Mbalia

The Hedgehog of Oz, Leonard

Sweep: The Story of a Girl and her Monster, Auxier

Amari and the Night Brothers, Alston

A Tale of Magic, Colfer
