Clarita
The Boxcar children but skip the first one because that's the one where the children are homeless orphans too afraid to find their grandfather. The rest are fun mysteries. Chronicles of Narnia, I do think there are sad parts in the stories but they do not phase my children much. I think some of it goes over their heads. Reading it as an adult it's a lot more emotional, because there are heavy themes in the book. Mercy Watson is super fun but will be quick reads. Eilonwy
My kids loved the Brambly Hedge books (great illustrations!) and Pippi and Beatrix Potter books, and recently enjoyed Skunk and Badger. Also Apricots at Midnight and Little House Books.

Alicia64
You absolutely want the book called The Read-Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease. I used this book every single day of my sons' childhood. It's a treasure. The first half of the book explains the thinking about why reading aloud is so important and the second half of the book is a wonderful book list with descriptions of each book and what ages the book is appropriate for. I can't speak highly enough about the Read-Aloud Handbook. And the book I recommend: From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Fabulous story. Have fun! kiwik
At 7 my youngest liked Roald Dahl, Alice in Wonderland, Mary Poppins, Nanny Piggins. Narnia was a year or two later.
