AurieD
Hi Hive, It’s my daughter’s eighth birthday soon and I’m hoping for some help on a craft/activity idea. We are having a party but keeping it simple with basically just a sausage sizzle and snack food at a park. I don’t usually do party games etc but I do like to have something set up for the kids to do at their leisure. In the past I’ve done decorate a slap-band and those dinosaur egg digs, simple but the kids enjoyed them and had something to take home. It will be 5ish eight year old girls plus a dozen or so younger 4-7 siblings and cousins. Plus a few younger/older. Requirements: Not too costly Can be set up outside Interesting for the eight year olds and can be done mostly independently but still okay for the littles (can get help from parents). Thank you! momto3innc
Decorate a basic wooden frame (like the cheap ones from a craft store). Then take a picture at the party and send everyone a printed copy. Frames tend to be very inexpensive and could be decorated with just markers and stickers or you could do glue/glitter, paint, etc…
TechWife
I have no ideas for you, but I would like to know what a sausage sizzle is.
wendyroo
I've done cookie decorating. Have a supply of cookies, frosting, sprinkles, and sandwich bags to take cookies home in.
athena1277
What about something to paint? You could got an assortment of wooden cutouts and paint colors. I know it’s a birthday party, but you could attach a ribbon to make them an ornament.

Bambam
Sharpie tie dye. https://www.marthastewart.com/892787/sharpie-tie-dye-t-shirt Get the cheap tshirts at Michaels or Hobby Lobby unless you can find somewhere cheaper. You would have to provide minimal supervision just to make sure no one drinks the rubbing alcohol.
AurieD
4 hours ago, TechWife said: I have no ideas for you, but I would like to know what a sausage sizzle is. Sausages cooked on a barbecue ( grill in the US maybe?) and put in a piece of break with tomato sauce with or without bbq’d onions. An easy and common (in Australia) way to feed a crowd. If the sausage sizzle is held at a polling booth during an election it’s called a democracy sausage. 3
Farrar
I also vote cupcake or cookie decorating. The nice part about it is that it tastes good, even if it doesn't look good and then no one has excess stuff to take home.
AurieD
Thank you, some good ideas. I like the idea of decorating cupcakes/biscuits but I’m in Perth in summer so it may be a bit warm for it (though it’s 18 and raining today!). The sharpie tie die looks cool, might save that idea for when all the little cousins aren’t around. Photo frames, I wonder if I can find ones that fit a Polaroid photo? Then I could borrow a Polaroid camera, I know a family member has one, and the kids could have photos for them on the day. I like that idea. Carol in Cal.
Discount School Supply has great craft supplies at good prices. Here are some cute photo frame blanks to decorate, keying off of the other ideas in this thread: https://www.discountschoolsupply.com/arts-crafts/arts-crafts-kits/craft-kits-projects/colorations-decorate-your-own-wooden-frames-set-of-12/p/s721117 These would support a bigger picture: https://www.discountschoolsupply.com/arts-crafts/arts-crafts-kits/craft-kits-projects/colorations-wooden-standing-frames---set-of-12/p/27707 These 6 X 6 inch scratch art pieces are a great non messy craft. Don’t forget to order the scratching sticks if you don’t have any! https://www.discountschoolsupply.com/arts-crafts/arts-crafts-kits/craft-kits-projects/colorations-scratch-designs-boards---set-of-100/p/23657 Goodie bags to decorate and fill: https://www.discountschoolsupply.com/arts-crafts/arts-crafts-kits/craft-kits-projects/colorations-craft-bags-with-handle---set-of-24/p/22856 These ornaments are clear plastic and snap together. You can fill them with Pom poms, folded paper, beads, yarn, little acorns and pebbles, or a combination. Or, if you’re willing to be VERY messy, a couple of tablespoons of different colors of paint, plus some glitter, put in one half, close and hold tightly while shaking until the entire inside is coated, then open up to dry. VERY messy. VERY. But, one of the better take home crafts I know of. https://www.discountschoolsupply.com/arts-crafts/arts-crafts-kits/craft-kits-projects/colorations-clear-heart-ornaments---set-of-12/p/2045
