I think now is the perfect time to job hop and seek out a good fit.  Stop feeling guilty.  It's not like you're stealing money or swearing eternal fidelity then dipping.  They are only paying you for the hours you work and no more.  The transaction is complete when you say it's complete.  There are more stores hiring now than ever so take advantage of this worker shortage to trade up until you like your position.

Actually, this reminds me a store near me that specializes in stone and tile had color/interior design consultants on hand to help customers choose their stone and tile. So, I definitely would expand my search to more specialty stores like furniture, flooring, stone... At that particular store the lady who helped me choose the right colored tile didn't even have to ring me up or anything. The sales associate rang me up, the stone materials expert talked to me about the different materials in countertops and the design consultant lady just helped me with the colors.

Same here. The tile person even came out to our house for free. I believe this store did tile (for kitchens and bathrooms), assorted  higher end flooring, and select window coverings. It was a smaller, but very professional atmosphere. I can’t imagine anyone being rude or yelling at an employee there.

There's a whole article in the Atlantic today that is relevant:

When customers can’t find anyone to help them or have to wait too long in line, they take it out on whichever overburdened employee they eventually hunt down."

This. So. many. Americans seem to think it's their right to take out their anger on....someone, anyone. Why? For decades, we've heard about the quintessential Ugly American. Guess we've finally brought the behavior home.

Someone throwing money in your face needs to be escorted out of the store. It's physical aggression.

And I worked retail for *years* in high school and college (80's/90's), for everything from JC Penney to little tourist shops in cities, in several different states. I never experienced anything like what it is now. There were almost always enough salespeople (in fact, the focus was to never let a customer wait more than 5 min for anything, so they staffed for that), and many of the workers had years of experience at the employer - even in the small retail shops (and sales people at Penney's used to have entire careers on the floor). We had time for lunches and occasionally conversations, there was a training period where you were watched over, and you could pretty much always get your questions answered pretty quickly.

What a sh*tshow now.

Worked this morning. Lucked out in that  I was the only one opening up front and all was quiet until fellow co-workers arrived. However, once it got busy all 3 of them left and I was up front by myself dealing with EVERYTHING. HR claims they are still trying to get me transferred.
I did something completely out of character for me. Couldn’t find HR or a manager when I clocked out so just resigned via email effective immediately.  Tired of the run around and tired of being told one thing yet it means another. Life is short and this store was making it shorter.

I know you said this isn't your passion, but regarding hardware stores, I find that the buying/shopping experience at Ace is totally different than the bigger stores.

DH and I were just talking about this.  He worked at Walmart when he was younger and practically lives at Home Depot.  He claims that Home Depot isn't a Hardware Store.    It is just a slightly specialized big box store.   Ace was his example of a hardware store.
