ProudGrandma
We are at my in laws in Michigan. When we arrived here on Sunday, I noticed my mil put a fully cooked, vacuum sealed ham on the back porch. It was barely cool to the touch and the temp on the porch was about 55 degrees. I didn't ask her how long it had been out there because she gets offended sort of easily about stuff like that. I immediately put it in the fridge. We are supposed to eat it for lunch today. Would you be concerned?
PrincessMommy
I wouldn't be. But I have a high tolerance for stuff like that. I'm also assuming it's cured ham.
ProudGrandma
It is smoked and cured... And I was able to find out that they bought it on Saturday morning, but I don't know if she had it in the fridge for a while or not.
alisoncooks
If it was out there for just a few (or even several) hours -- I'd eat it. Especially if it'll get reheated. FWIW, my MIL doesn't follow food safety practices that I'm comfortable with. (One year, she thawed the turkey in the only bath tub -- same tub I was supposed to bathe my infant in that evening. Nope.) I get that careful balance of being safe vs. offending her. Edited December 31, 2019 by alisoncooks
ProudGrandma
It looked and smelled fine when we opened the package... No slime either.
marbel
Ham that is salted and cured? Full of chemical preservatives? And not slimey? I'd eat it up! 🙂 I follow food safety rules pretty strictly but with stuff like ham, pepperoni and other cured meats, I bend them freely. I think I'm relatively picky about such things, but that wouldn't concern me in the least.
gardenmom5
considering how ham's are processed - many are only "cooked" to heat them up.
