happypamama
If my kid did a specific geometry book in 9th grade (AOPS), but wants to use Saxon for precalculus (she decided AOPS is not her thing and is using Lial for Algebra 2 this year), that's their Advanced Math book, correct? Would we skip the geometry parts, or do them anyway (are they repetitive after a geometry book?), and if we skipped them, would it still be enough to be considered a precalc/trig class? cbollin
My oldest and middle used Saxon Advanced and called it Pre Calc. They did a different book for Geometry (jacobs) and we still did all of the lessons in Advanced. Didn't hurt anything to review/remember, repeat. Middle gal is not STEM bound needing more than college algebra (so did any of this matter?). Oldest is a triple STEM major getting ready to get her bachelors in a few weeks. Her degrees are in engineering, comp sci, and math. Oh, and both of them did Advanced in two semesters using lesson plans from mfw. others will have other opinions but that's how it worked out for us.
CAJinBE
We've been using Saxon and we are calling Precalculus the last third of the Advanced Math book and the first third of the Calculus book. We called the first two thirds of Advanced Math Trigonometry with Geometry. The geometry parts are scattered throughout and would be hard to skip. I guess you could skip the geometry problems on the exams too. We couldn't have managed the entire Advanced Math book in two semesters. We did all the problems and all the exams, plus watched the DIVE DVD.
G5052
Yes, certainly feasible. Do keep in mind though that many people consider it to be a 3 semester book. Mine took parts of two summers and a school year to finish it. Poor kid actually finished it in July of his senior year.
RootAnn
I'd do the whole book (shudder- tutored from the book once and hated it) because of how integrated everything is. The extra practice shouldn't be a problem if she already knows the material.
SparklyUnicorn
I'd probably do the whole book, but I think you could pick and choose. It's a longgg book. So that might be the bigger issue if you are trying to complete it in one year. FWIW, I have never assigned every problem in Saxon. More like half in each section. That worked out well for my kid.
happypamama
Okay, thanks everyone! I didn't realize it would be such a long book. I guess they're expecting that you do their Algebra 1, then their Algebra 2, and then their Advanced Math, but we do want to complete it in one year, so it probably isn't the best option. We only ever did half of the problems in Saxon also, unless she needed more practice, and that did work well. I think I'll look at Lial's Precalculus since it follows what we're using this year.
