Log Splitter

Does anyone have an electric or a manual log splitter? If so, how do they work? We really need to get one and have been looking at an electric one and a manual one that uses hydraulics. Would really like to have some recommendations.

We rent one for one day each year to split logs for the woodstove. It's electric. There are two handles that you use to hold the log in place then a blade slowly comes down from above. Like this but electrichttps://www.titan-pro.co.uk/details.aspx?p=158&gclid=Cj0KCQiAnOzSBRDGARIsAL-mUB3UWeFvI3VvU2oOQg72wMrZvYhP3t6J5ASN5XTepKJgOWXu2DoJ-ZcaAk1nEALw_wcB

We have a gas powered log splitter that was definitely worth the investment.  We only use it a couple days a year but we use it every year and it doesn't really require any on going maintenance so it was a one time investment.

The biggest benefits over renting are not having to do it all in one or two days, not having to deal with pick up and drop off (not a huge hassle but who really likes towing the thing home then back to the rental place), and not having to work around someone else's schedule (there was never one available on the warm day we had free if we didn't schedule ahead and if we did something always came up that made 8 hours of splitting wood inconvenient for that day).

We purchased it for around $1000 and rentals in our area are around $100 a day so it paid for itself in 5 years (we always needed 2 days and that was working more than we wanted to each day).

My dad built a gas powered one that was a thing of beauty. I still have fond memories of splitting wood with him.

Hubby bought one for under 500.00 at home depot. He has always split by hand, but age is factoring into his decision to get one. He has never rented one before. He just did some research and bought a small electric one. He’s quite happy with it.

That's good to know. I think this is the type my husband has been looking at.
