madteaparty
Please don't say Eat Pray Love ;) Thus far I have Halliburton Book of Marvels, The Great Railway Bazaar, and the Art of Travel by Alain De Botton. Will read most with DS who will probably end up writing a teen version of a travelogue. The writing needs to be great on its own; I can't get through most travel blogs for boredom. I already know where I am going and what I'm doing, so this is not looking for travel guides per se. Thanks all!

Maybe this isn't the sort of thing you are looking for, but I've liked the yearly "Best American Travel Writing" series of collected short works. I didn't like all of the pieces, but it is easy enough to skip over the ones I didn't like. Edited May 11, 2017 by GGardner

Closeacademy
In the Empire of Genghis Khan I loved this book. It's an epic adventure tracing Genghis Khan's journey backwards from Turkey to his birthplace in Mongolia.

azucena
"A Time of Gifts," by Patrick Leigh Fermor. It's the (first part) of the story of how he, as a young man, embarked on a journey to walk from Holland to Constantinople right before World War II. The prose can be flowery, but it's a remarkable book.
