shawthorne44
Children's Book of Virtues. There is a picture book, and also a big thick book with many stories and with just a few illustrations.

mom2bee
Do you live near a used book store? You can look for a set of Public School reading anthologies for 1st-2nd grade with a variety of stories in them. I liked Houghton Mifflins Reading, Scott Foremans Reading Street and SRA Open Courts Reading also. They have trade books compiled into graded volumns and if you get them used.
MistyMountain
I really liked James Herriot's Treasury for Children. He has other ones too.
fdrinca
+1 to the Harriot recommendation. What Do People Do All Day is a big favorite as well. If you can find one of the older, unabridged versions, it's even better.
Ausmumof3
Do you like Richard Scarry or Eloise Wilkins? They both have anthologies/omnibuses. We also like Paddington bear which is kind of a ch book but is more like connected stories. Middle headed wombat is similar for an Aussie flavour.
Ausmumof3
Any mythologies or fairy tales in there?
Slache
Any mythologies or fairy tales in there? Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales Greek, Roman and Norse myths (3 separate books, I can't recall the author right now)

Just in general, I've found that the used good bookstores have compilations as a bargain. It is like the people pricing can't imagine a kid's book selling for more $9. So, no matter how big the book is, or how much it cost originally, that is the max price. So, a 4-book Dr. Seuss book will cost $9, and one of those books by itself will be $7.50,

If you have a very specific one in mind maybe you won't find it but in general there are some really good ones available affordably.
