musicianmom
Will R&S English have enough writing for my 2nd and 3rd grader next year, or do I need to add in WWE? I need to take a minimalist approach due to my work schedule, but I don't want them to fall behind.
sunshineslp
I've heard R&S writing isn't that great...? If it were me I would add WWE. but it will be interesting to see others opinions. SilverMoon
As long as they're writing out a fair amount of the exercises, it's plenty of writing. SWB said as much in older WTM editions before WWE existed.
lorisuewho
I think it will be absolutely fine to skip WWE if you are doing R&S thoroughly. Edited April 20, 2016 by lorisuewho
2_girls_mommy
It's absolutely enough. It teaches writing very well. It doesn't include dictation, which you would get from WWE, but when mine were little I just added that in myself in their other subjects, using a line from SOTW or a science fact or from a Ramona book or a famous quote. Ellie
No, you do not. R&S's English series is very comprehensive, covering both composition and grammar well. It is even better if you require your dc to do their assignments in writing instead of orally, because much of the grammar also requires writing.
bethben
I'm the dissenter here. I like IEW writing and use it with Rod and Staff English. I guess there just wasn't a weekly writing activity to keep skills up. I skip all the writing activities in R&S. That being said, in level 5, there are some nice instructions on how to outline information for a report.
SilverMoon
Oh you absolutely *can* do a different writing program easily enough if you want to. We did around the English 5 book because we wanted progymnasmata methods instead. Even then I wouldn't call it a *need*, and especially not for a kid in book 2 or 3, where the composition practice is embedded in the grammar lessons. But even skipping the actual composition lessons in R&S isn't skipping all the actual writing, unless you're doing the exercises orally. Copying the sentences to add the correct punctuation or helping verb is also learning composition skills.
