Two great read-alouds (Kindle) this week: $.99 & FREE

Recommended Posts

If you haven't found The Green Ember for your young-to-middle grade students yet, now is a great time to check it out.

It is only $.99 on Kindle until Saturday the 28th.

A shorter prequel (not a direct prequel, but still a prequel) is FREE on Kindle for the same amount of time. It is called The Black Star of Kingston.

Enjoy!

I realize this is middle grade but...do you think it might hold the attention of a reasonably bright 6 year old, or should we wait a few years? I see reviews comparing it to Narnia, and she loved The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and The Magician's Nephew...(The sample pages look like they'd engage her, but there's only so much you can tell from a few pages.)

And I realize for $0.99 I should just buy the darned thing and decide for myself, but if we need to wait a few years I know it'll just get lost within the bottomless sea of our Kindle library never to be heard from again.)

If she can handle Narnia she'd be fine with this one.

It'll depend on the kid. My youngest was so-so on it, but my next one up really enjoyed it. (Both are boys.) YMMV!

It definitely isn't just for middle grades. It is geared more for elementary or upper elementary, but my middle school kids liked it as a read aloud (but finished it on their own first as a self-read).

My kids really enjoy animal adventures, although the animals in this don't always seem like animals, if you know what I mean.

Edited to add that there are some mild danger scenes (in the Green Ember) that a really sensitive kid might not enjoy. Also, the book isn't perfect - there are parts in the middle that drag a bit & I had to assure the kids that it would get better quickly when they were a little lost at the very beginning. But, it IS worth it. We had some really good discussions as we were going through it.

Is this available for kindle unlimited only? That is what is showing up when I click the link.

No. If you look right underneath the Kindle Unlimited stuff, you'll see that it says $0.00 to buy (Black Star of Kingston) or $0.99 to buy (Green Ember).

(I really dislike the Kindle Unlimited promotional button because it is misleading. But, I did confirm these before I posted, so they are legit -- at least until this Saturday!)

I've read both to ages 7, 5, and 3. They loved both books but liked The Green Ember better. If she's ok with the White Witch, she will probably be fine with these books.

Fun side note: SD Smith (the author) was homeschooled for awhile.
