Jean in Newcastle Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 I have an unpainted/unstained wood windowsill that has had a problem with mildew. I have cleaned the windowsill with a bleach/water mixture per instructions from the internet. There are still some black stains remaining. I'm thinking of just painting over it all with an enamel paint (because I already happen to have some) once it is completely dry. Good idea? Bad? Reasons why? Quote

mathnerd Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Try to clean it with borax dissolved in water - and let it dry naturally. In my case, it took away the mildew stain. If that does not work, I think that you can coat it with a primer that has anti-mildew properties (e.g. Zinnser Mold killing primer) and then paint on top of it. 1 Quote

DaisyDay Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Agree with prairiewindmomma. Kilz it first, then paint over it. 1 Quote
Farrar Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 (edited) Kilz will do it. That's its whole purpose. Contain the ick after you've done all you can and let you start afresh. Edited January 29, 2016 by Farrar 1 Quote
