Chris in VA
She is interested in reading more classics--these past few months, she's read Jane Eyre, Call of the Wild and White Fang, Wuthering Heights, and maybe a couple more. She's just checked out The Scarlet Letter from the library. For Christmas, I'd like to give her 3-5 very nicely bound classics. Last year, she got some from Barnes and Noble, but they were kinda generic--pretty, but IDK, I want something nicer. Any ideas? I guess I'm looking for a bound "series"--like, classic books bound as a set that you don't have to buy as a set. I can't seem to find hardcovers. Penguin
I don't own any of these, but the Folio Society books certainly look drool-worthy. Too bad they are $$$. http://www.foliosociety.com/ I have some beautiful hardbacks, but I bought most of them in used book shops. Do you have any nice used shops? I know some people don't think that used stuff makes a good gift, no matter how nice...so there is that.
The Governess
These are gorgeously bound, but not illustrated: http://www.penguin.com/static/pages/classics/hardcoverclassics/
skimerinkydo
The last couple of years I have searched for beautifully illustrated classics. I have found more children's classics that are illustrated. Some are out of print. I buy used. Here are some I have found. TammyS
Keep looking at Barnes and Noble, particularly in the "remaindered" section. They often do have nice hardbacks of classics for sale, at not bad prices.

wathe
What about this series of annotated classics? I've enjoyed both the The Annotated Oz, The Annotated Alice and the Annotated Anne. They are unabridged texts with copious notes in the margins, and lots of illustrations.

Chris in VA
Oh, those Juniper books ARE lovely. Too spendy, though. She'd love those, though.
Catwoman
Another recommendation for Easton Press. You might also find the older Franklin Library classics on eBay or in a used book store, but you have to make sure the Franklin ones are fully leatherbound, because some of them aren't. (My dh collects leather bound books, so I learned pretty quickly which ones not to buy!) The brand new prices have gotten ridiculously high, but sometimes you can get good deals on eBay. If there are used book stores in your area, give them a call and ask if they have any Easton Press or Franklin Library books, because I have gotten lucky and found them in smaller stores for around $20.00 each, particularly for the common titles -- which are exactly the ones you would be looking for. :) Oh, and just because you don't see them on the shelves in the used book stores doesn't mean they don't have some behind the counter. Always ask!
