MrsWeasley
I'm looking for a Halloween read-aloud for my eight year old. Some of our favorites from previous years include: The Night Gardener, The Halloween Tree, The Graveyard Book, and Coraline. Some flops have included Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Dahl's The Witches, and Goosebumps. So what are your favorite spooky reads for this age? Aurelia
I haven't read all of these, but the ones I haven't look promising: Un Lun Dun (maybe) The Wolves in the Walls The BFG A Drowned Maiden's Hair Liesl and Po Splendors and Glooms A Curious Tale of the In-Between
Holly
It's not really scary, but I loved the Bunnicula books at that age. Howliday Inn was my favorite. My DC have enjoyed them as well.
HomeAgain
An old one, but the Canterville Ghost is wonderful - it's much better than the Jodie Foster movie (though the Margaret O'Brien movie stayed truer to the book).
Lizzie in Ma
My Mom used to always read this one to us from our My Book House set. http://blog.orangecountykidsactivities.com/tippity-witchits-halloween/
knitmama
Hist Whist (e.e. cummings) and Poe's The Raven. It wouldn't be Halloween at our house without 'em!
kolamum
Well, I wouldn't call it spooky, but there is a Halloween Feast in the 2nd HP book. :)
KateHW
I'm saving this book to read to my son around Halloween. http://www.amazon.com/Nightmares-Jason-Segel/dp/0385744269/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1443630799&sr=8-5&keywords=nightmare
mommymilkies
You can look at past years, but we always use these lists. http://www.allhallowsread.com/ We've read Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children (maybe a tad old for your age), Coraline, The House With A Clock in Its Walls, and this year we have A Monster Calls. A Tale Dark and Grimm is *excellent* but doesn't hold back on the original Grimm-ness, so make sure your kids enjoy that sort of thing. My kids loved the series.
momma2three
Wait Till Helen Comes was one of my favorite books as a child... really spooky, but I reread it over and over, and then every year at Halloween until I was well into my teens! athomeontheprairie
I was going to recommend the night gardener, but you've already read it :-) If anyone else needs a good book, we just finished that one and LOVED it
Tanaqui
Doll Bones is a recent one we've enjoyed.
