athomeontheprairie
I need to order blankets for all four kids. BUT I really don't know how to judge them online. I want: Heavy enough for winter, without needing to add more layers. Thin is better than super puffy. Solid colors Do you have blankets you love? Can you link me? AK_Mom4
We love down alternative blankets. The ones I have are like these on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Pur-Luxe-Down-Alternative-Blanket/dp/B00QY14A2I/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1442419070&sr=8-14&keywords=down+alternative+blanket My one kid who sleeps cold always uses a heavier down alternative comforter year round like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Grand-Down-Season-Alternative-Comforter/dp/B005TOVZSS/ref=sr_1_3?s=bedbath&ie=UTF8&qid=1442419311&sr=1-3&keywords=down+alternative+comforter I have one like this, but DH and I only use it in the winter as it is usually too warm for us. The down alternative blankets are perfect for three seasons for us.
AuNaturel
Yes! I'm following this thread. I need new sheets and blankets too. I'll admit, we have been using the ones that were passed down from my husband's grandmother for ages. The quality of them was phenomenal, but after years and years, they are beginning to wear out. They are still in one piece, but the colors are faded and there are stains that I can't remove. Check with your family first! After kids leave the nest, most mothers have more linens than they need and are more than happy to pass them on to the next generation. But I've already exhausted that resource! I've purchased a few in stores that fell apart in months. Wasted money. I'm tempted to start hunting in thrift stores but buying used sheets could be the equivalent or worse than used underwear! I'd rather front the money, even if it's a small fortune, for new durable ones. But I've yet to find any that come close to good quality. :( Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
Zoo Keeper
We love the wool blankets from L. L. Bean. Pricey, but worth it. One that we are using is over thirty years old, and still looks and feels great. Another is over twenty years old and going strong as well. PeterPan
We have these blankets for our beds and super love them. http://www.target.com/p/simply-shabby-chic-blanket/-/A-15033909#prodSlot=large_1_9 I think the new ones are now a single layer, from what the reviews are saying. Ours are the double layer. The single layer would be easier to wash, so I guess just pros and cons. Totally different direction, but you could get down comforters from Ikea and put a duvet cover on them. I don't know how much their normal prices are. I got one for $10 for dd on clearance one year. Sometimes Kohls will have down comforters on clearance too. You'd use them instead of a blanket.

Miss Peregrine
The Calvin Klein blankets at Costco are great.
Guest
I got this one a few years ago after getting down comforters (light fill) for a few beds, and I like this down blanket the best of all. You use it like a regular blanket (eg with sheets) and don't have to mess with comforter covers (nice idea, hassle) and they are not TOO HOT. And they stay on the bed like a blanket. http://www.thecompanystore.com/classic-european-down-blanket/KN98.html?cgid=cs-blankets-throws&dwvar_KN98_color=ANTIQUE%20GOLD&start=2 PS. Looks like they are on a tiny-bit of a sale at the moment.
idnib
We received Faribault wool blankets from a relative who lives in MN. We love these but they are expensive. However they show almost no wear after ~10 winters. They are fairly thin but quite warm.

gardenmom5
we do down. Costco has good comforters for a good price. when we lose power - and it's get's colder at night, we can throw a single heavy wool blanket on top which really traps the heat and they're quite warm.
