athomeontheprairie
My laptop keyboard has stopped working correctly. I can't use certain keys (b, d, t, p, and I'm sure there are others) when I push those keys, it's like I'm performing a function ( it locks down the computer, or closes all the windows, or opens a help bar, etc.) I imagine somewhere on my computer a setting got changed (likely caused by the 1to :-/) how do i fix this!?
NicksMama-Zack's Mama Too
Sounds like a shift or ctrl key might be stuck. Can you plug in another keyboard and restart?
kiana
Possibly a setting but investigate low-tech first. Make sure that one of your keys isn't stuck down, like control/alt/start.
athomeontheprairie
All of the keys are in their upright position.
kiana
Double-check with another keyboard if available. You should be able to plug in a USB keyboard or similar.
Lanny
If you have a USB Keyboard available, plug it into the laptop and try to get the laptop (not just Windows) to Restart. completely It does sound like something may be stuck, although you believe none of the keys are depressed. However, it might also be that the keyboard has developed a fatal problem and will need to be replaced. If you need to replace it, look for a replacement keyboard for the laptop model you have on eBay and look for the service manual on the web site of the OEM (the laptop manufacturer). GL P.S. On the Dell Latitude E6400 laptops we have, replacing a keyboard (or many other components) would be very simple. How simple the replacement will be (if you determine a keyboard replacement is necessary) depends upon how the laptop was designed and how easy/hard it is to service. mamiof5
Maybe try unplugging/plugging again the keyboard and restarting? Also, shake the keyboard upside down...when I dust and do that I am always surprised to see the amount of stuff that was on it. Maybe a little something could be pressing something and you can't see it? Computers are quirky, hope it's just a minor fix.
Tsuga
I think it sounds like a simple keyboard problem. I agree that first plugging in another keyboard is a good test. If that works, try compressed air to clean the keyboard. It doesn't matter if all the keys are in their upright position. A misplaced crumb, or any number of things, could cause a stuck or misfiring key.

If all else fails, it's pretty easy to replace a laptop keyboard.
