mamakelly
I'm looking at Notgrass for high school American History for my 16 year old. Are there any other choices that the hive recommends?
Jenn121
I am using Hewitt Homeschooling syllabus which uses BJU as a spine and then has them reading and writing about other books such as 1776 and The Mercury 13.( they have a list you can choose from) So far we are liking it. ktgrok
We're going to use Bookshark. It's labeled on their website as 8th grade, but they are changing that. The materials say Core 120 on them. It's for 12-16 year olds. I'm just using the history portion, we are using something else for language arts/literature. (Sonlight Core 430 - American Literature). We went back and forth between notgrass and bookshark, but he liked the look of bookshark better.
Aretemama
A History of the American People by Paul Johnson is one recommendation I've heard in classical homeschooling circles that we're adding to my DS's US History reading list this year. Hmmm this is good to know. I ordered Hewitt's jr high syllabus for American History. I didn't even think about ordering high school, duh!

klmama
Do you prefer a textbook or a book that reads more like fiction? As someone mentioned, the BJU textbook is good. Some don't use BJU for various reasons, so here are some other alternatives. For a textbook, I like America: Pathways to the Present. There are several older editions available used on Amazon.http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_17?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=america+pathways+to+the+present&sprefix=america+pathways+%2Caps%2C177 For an easy read, I like William J. Bennet's America: The Last Best Hope series (3 volumes). Again, there are many used versions on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_21?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=america+the+last+best+hope&sprefix=america+the+last+best%2Caps%2C276
Jaz
My ds really didn't like Notgrass American history. We were watching documentaries too and he felt the textbook repeated the same information and was boring to read. We quit using it about a quarter of the way through... freeindeed
My 9th grader is using Sonlight Core 100 for American History this year. We like it so far.
Pam L in Mid Tenn
My 12th grader is reading Bennett's "America, The Last Best Hope" and the Cengage edition of "The American Pagent". He is a history buff so I get more oral narrations than I really want. :) He'll do several quizzes from quizlet.com. And will write a few 2-page "reports". Haiku
We are doing a combo of America: The Story of US with activities from the teacher guide, Howard Zinn's Young People's History, We Were There, Too, and the Stanford History Education Group's materials. DD will also be reading USHistory.org's online textbook. History is a subject where I think it's good to come form multiple angles so you don't view everything through one lens.
SilverMoon
We use the free schedule from FundaFunda, which schedules the Paul Johnson book recommended upthread with the lecture series from Great Courses and a few other resources.
