PrairieSong
I have a toothache, probably a filling that needs to be redone or needs a root canal, and saw my regular dentist on Wednesday. He did an x-ray and exam but couldn't determine exactly which tooth or what the problem was so I have an appointment with a specialist next Thursday. The pain gets very intense at times and ibuprofen won't touch it, so he gave me a prescription for Norco (hydrocodone/acetaminophen) to be taken every four hrs or as needed. I have only needed one pill per day, but today I had horrible nausea for about six hours. And today was the only day I remembered to take it with food. Is there anything that would help the nausea if it happens again?
Chris in VA
IDK, but I can't take that combo, so my dentist told me to take 2 Extra Strength Tylenol with 2 Ibuprofen. I got the same level of pain relief without the addiction possibility and the nausea.
unsinkable
I'm sorry to hear this. :-( So the nausea happened when you DID take it with food? Can you call the pharmacy that filled the script and ask for suggestions? I get pretty loopy on pain meds and I feel the best when I can just go to bed. Moving around makes me dizzy which in turn makes me nauseous. (((Hugs)))
unsinkable
Oh and I usually DO have to take pain meds with food...but only a very small amount of very bland food, like a cracker or a few pieces of dry cereal.

I never take Tylenol because it does nothing for me, even when I just have a nagging headache or something. Maybe the two in conjunction would work better. I'm not too worried about getting addicted because I've only been taking it when I absolutely need it, which has been once a day so far. I can't drive, but I can deal with it. The nausea was just horrible though. I spent most of the day in bed either napping or distracting myself with the iPad. Guest
You might ask for a different pain killer. That's what worked for my mom.
PrairieSong
Oh and I usually DO have to take pain meds with food...but only a very small amount of very bland food, like a cracker or a few pieces of dry cereal. I ate a couple hardboiled eggs at lunchtime and took it right after that. The other times when I didn't get nauseous I didn't eat any food with it. Weird. When the nausea wasn't subsiding after a while, I ate a handful of walnuts but it didn't really help. I didn't cook supper because I couldn't stand to even look at food. Fortunately dh and kids are capable of fending for themselves if needed.

My brain can't handle the scrolling of the IPad or even TV when i take strong pain meds like those. It increases my dizzy feeling. I mostly listen to music or radio. Jean in Newcastle
Hydrocodone makes me have projectile vomiting. TMI, I know. But I think you would know if you had a reaction like that already!

Oh dear. I'm sorry. I hardly ever actually throw up, even with morning sickness. I just constantly feel like I need to. I don't remember if I've ever had hydrocodone. Probably not. I rarely take any prescription meds.
ssavings
Norco makes me very ill (vomiting). I've had it prescribed twice for kidney stones that wouldn't pass quickly. I called my doctor and he replaced it with a percocet prescription, which, while still nauseating, wasn't nearly as bad.
SeaConquest
Hydrocodone makes me have projectile vomiting. TMI, I know. But I think you would know if you had a reaction like that already! It does the same to me, but Oxycodone works well for me with no nausea. You could ask for that. Ibuprofen wouldn't cut it if I had serious pain. Eta: I prefer straight Oxycodone to Percocet because the Tylenol in Percocet gives me rebound headaches.
Jean in Newcastle
I can't have anything with codeine in it. Hydrocodone has codeine in it, from what I understand.
