Seasider
IKEA seems to have the best prices for new bunk bed frames. I am wondering how solid they are. If you have a set, would you please tell me if you think it would stand up to use by older teens/young adults (heavier than little kids)? ocelotmom
I've seen one of the metal-framed loft beds (not sure which) used by a late teen without issue, and bunk beds are generally going to be sturdier. I think things like the height of the individual using it and the ceiling height would be the biggest limiting factors.
gingersmom
I had an ikea wood bunk bed for my son that always seemed sturdy to me till he turned around 13. He was around 5"10 and 175 and I didn't want him using top bunk anymore.
amyinva
My 13 and 15yo are using an ikea bunk bed, the top bunk dweller (and heavier child) weighs 130. No problems. They have the nicer ikea mattresses, though.
Spryte
Our adult son used his IKEA loft bed till his senior year in HS. No issues, it was just time to pass it on in favor of a more adult bed. It was a wooden model, not metal. It went on to be used by other young teens. I have no idea about the metal beds. Do they lust weight limits? Catherine
My 18 yo uses a wood Ikea loft bed with no problem, BUT, consider the potential height of the kid, not just the weight. He is 6'2" and really, it is too short for him, but he'd rather keep it with the loft element than change to a larger bed that takes up floor space. Seasider
Good idea on considering height and checking on weight limits. Both guys are slim but one is pretty tall. I definitely want to look at the IKEA mattresses, too. Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like we need to focus on the wooden models. Just wondered if it were worth a trip to the store or if I could just cross IKEA off the list. Good to know it's an option, folks selling their bunk beds on craigslist these days are asking stout prices.
Spryte
Oh, DS says one more tip... Consider the height of the bed, plus the height of the ceiling ... If you have a kid who wants to sit up in bed and read then s/he might not like the top bunk.
Laura Corin
My boys both had this bed: it's not a full bunk because the rooms were too low to fit them. Hobbes is still in his (he's about 5'5"). Calvin was starting to feel uncomfortable when he neared 5'10". The beds have lasted well.
Stacia
My dd has an Ikea loft type bed that's a mix of wood & metal. She's had it since she was around 9yo (she's now 17). She's about 5'10" & weighs an adult weight. It has held up well through the years & she still loves it.
