GoVanGogh
Where would you go? We are in the south/centeral US, but we are open to flying somewhere and renting a car Between 7-10 days in late May Would like to see as much as we can in that time frame without spending too much time on the road Looking for national and state park recommendations, along with museums, caves, etc. What would be your ideal geology road trip/field trip? SebastianCat
If you are anywhere close to the panhandle of Florida, the Florida Caverns is in Marianna and was a lot of fun to visit. The underground geology in Florida is somewhat unique because there is so much limestone - there are springs where people do cave diving all over the north central part of the state.
EmilyGF
Any desert will be amazing because the plants won't have grown up to cover the rocks. We did a great Eastern Sierra field trip in college to Owen's Valley, Devil's Postpile, Redrock Canyon, and Lone Pine. We camped at the foot of Mount Whitney. If you're in the South Eastern/Central region, I'd head over to New Mexico and Utah, which are amazing. You can't go wrong there.
Miss Tick
Well, if you did focus on Four Corners, add Paria Canyon to your list, that place has long intrigued.
Farrar
Hawaii. Volcanos! Barring that... Utah. Bryce and Zion. Tons of stuff to see. Or, if you're really open to flying somewhere... why stick to the US? You're on the east coast, yes? Go to Iceland. No, really, go to Iceland. It's in-freaking-credible for geology. Icelandair offers good deals sometimes too.
Rachel
You may be close enough for day trips to Trammell Fossil Park outside Cincinnati. It's free and you can dig fossils. Mammoth Cave in western Ky could be a good day trip too.
Slartibartfast
You can dig up rose rocks if you are near Oklahoma or the crystals on the salt plains. http://www.fws.gov/refuge/salt_plains/visit/dig.html
