stupidusername
The book is "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand. My 11-year old son and I are reading the young adult adaptation: http://www.amazon.com/Unbroken-The-Young-Adult-Adaptation/dp/0385742517 My son, not a big reader, LOVES it. We are doing read-aloud every day. I circle the words he doesn't know and enter them into Anki (an App that helps with memorization). It is an incredible, inspiring story about a World War II hero. It's hard to put the book down! We are looking forward to seeing the movie when it comes out next month (December 25th).
Miss Tick
Thanks for the recommendation! I pencilled it in for when we get to WWII in the new year.

teitel
I can't say enough good things about this book. It truly will make you stop and think about our greatest generation and their experience in the war. Both of my boys and I absolutely loved this book. We plan to see the movie when it comes out at Christmas. I know it can't compare to the book but still it looks really good.
Soror
I read and loved the adult version but didn't realize there was a YA one, I will have to keep that in mind for ds.
FriedClams
Thank you. I was recently irritated at the bookstore when it seemed every newly released book had strong female protagonists and idiot boy sidekicks. I'd like a little more balance (I have a daughter so I get the strong girl thing), and I appreciate your recommendation.
MiMi 4under3
Thank you! I put it into my Amazon cart. :)
kbutton
I haven't read the book, but I know others who have loved it. I should think about having my son read it. Louis Zamperini spoke at my alma mater a long time ago--I am so glad his story has been preserved.
FairProspects
I didn't realize there was a YA version either. I enjoyed the adult version but I was sitting here thinking it was far too graphic for an 11 y.o.!
