mamiof5
Literature guides have always got my attention, but oh my...some of those are so pricey! Would love to do some next year with my 2nd and 3rd grader, but hopefully without breaking the bank  Would really appreciate any suggestions! nansk
For elementary levels, look for the free ideas on homeschoolshare.com. For high school levels, look at the free Glencoe literature guides. Also, Scholastic Teacher Express occasionally has $1 sales for their lit guide ebooks. Search these forums for recommendations and links. pitterpatter
These may not be what you're looking for, but I find them to be quite good. http://www.theeducationcenter.com/marketplace/TEC30075/detail.do?productId=TEC30075&OID=78278&contentTypeId=0&tcid=&ccid= http://www.theeducationcenter.com/marketplace/TEC30048/detail.do?productId=TEC30048&OID=536930169&contentTypeId=0&tcid=&ccid=
kagmypts
Kolbe Academy has a literature guide that covers 41 books. The student book is $20, and the teacher's guide is an additional $20. The suggested age range is 4th - 6th grade so it may be slightly old for your kids. However, here is the link in case you want to look at the books included and see if it would be a good match with your kids. http://books.kolbe.org/store/p/437-ELEMENTARY-LITERATURE-STUDY-GUIDE-STUDENT-BOOK-ONLY.html
Heidi
I've found a few free ones just by googling the book title and "literature guide."
Lori D.
Here are some free resources: Homeschool Share reading units (by age: toddler/preschool; pre-school-kinder; young elementary; middle elementary; chapter books; independent study; multi-age; and then by one of several different themes) Reading Units by Gay Miller (mostly late elementary/middle school, but a few early elementary) Novel Study reading guides by Brian Thornton (elementary/middle school) Garden of Praise: Literature Based Reading Lessons (elementary) Teacher Vision: Teacher Guides to Primary Literature (elementary -- extension activities) Google search Try: "literature guide for ..." or "study guide for ...." or "activities for ..." Amazing what you can find out there that's already been posted by teachers -- sometimes just a helpful list of questions; other times resources; and once in awhile, a complete syllabus. Downside: takes time to sift through the search results and collate what is useful to you into a coherent and useable "guide" for YOU. Example: a search of "Charlotte's Web, activities" came up with: - chapter summaries, quizzes, interactive games put together by a 2nd grade class = http://www2.lhric.or...lotte/index.htm- literature theme printables, worksheets, activities, word puzzles & more = http://abcteach.com/...charlottes_web/- free online learning games (based on the book) = http://www.gamequari...rlottesweb.html- language arts/classroom work station/activities = http://www.teachnet....otte061799.html- enrichment activities = http://www.teachervi...ivity/1732.html
MerryAtHope
For elementary aged kids, instead of a guide I would read Deconstructing Penguins and just have some fun discussions. Later on, I like Glencoe's free guides and also Sparknotes. Merry :-)
