Chris in VA
A person dear to me has found out her tumors are benign--she's already had the Big C and is quite grateful to have this news. Now she wants to do something "meaningful" with her extensive vacation time. I have one place in Africa (she mentioned overseas as a great possibility) to tell her about, but...Any ideas? Personal experiences? Or not--whatever you can mention.
Haiku
I am going to Eastern Europe in June to volunteer at two institutions for disabled kids. PM me if you want more info. I also have a suggestion for Africa. Tara
KrissiK
Is she looking for a Christian or secular organization? A family in our homeschool group is on staff with Youth With a Mission. They have a lot of volunteer type things for all ages, although they are a Christian organization.
*lifeoftheparty*
You can ask local churches if they support any foreign places. For instance, we are one of several churches that support an orphanage in Peru. We send them an offering every month and if anyone wants to go there on a missions trip, the pastor can get you in touch with them. We also have just started supporting a family run ministry in Guatemala. It's basically this husband and wife (Guatemalan) who started inviting the local children who have nowhere to go before and after school to their home. These kids are very poor and they only get one measly meal a day at school, and then spend a lot of time on the streets. Many of them end up being trafficked, or end up in some other bad predicament. So, this couple has them over and provides them with food and entertains them with crafts, games, bible stories and songs, etc. They do this out of their own pocket. Anyways, we have also started sending them a monthly offering and some members of the church have gone down twice now to help out, and some more are going in a few weeks. So, maybe there are some churches near her that do the same thing and she can join whatever group that goes on a missions trip.
Mama Geek
http://eightdaysofhope.com/ This group came into the area that I am staying in right now and did a lot of rebuilding after it had been pretty damaged by flooding in October.
MIch elle
Our church sponsors Lynn with Connect Africa. She visits once/year and gives a sermon/update on what she's doing. She WANTS people to visit and build a relationship with her students. http://connect-africa.org/
Ottakee
Check out www.jesusinhaiti.org We have known the main missionary for 20+ years. They offer all sorts of very hands on, meaningful missions trips.....some more medical, some building, some teaching, etc. Our church is sending 2 groups this summer so it would likely be easy for her to link up with another group if she would want. http://www.jesusinhaiti.org/default.asp?contentid=93 is the link to the page for those wanting to go to Haiti.
