profmom
I've used WT 1 & 2 previously, with an older child, and now I can't remember what I added. Actually, I think I had him do R & S English on top of it! However, I'm now thinking that may not be necessary. I would probably need to add spelling at a minimum. What do you guys add? Alira
We used Junior Analytical Grammar with WT 1, and this year we're doing JAG: Mechanics with WT 2. It's been a good balance. :)
Mom0012
We just did spelling, handwriting practice, and reading (Sonlight). I didn't add in any extra grammar and have no regrets.
texasmama
FLL3, handwriting and Sequential Spelling. IMO, WT1 is pretty light on grammar, though it picks up the pace in WT2. I still do another grammar program with WT2, but I'm crazy like that. And I can completely see the possibility of skipping it if you are not grammar nuts like me. :)
profmom
Can I revive this thread? :) I'm still undecided about language arts for 3rd grade, along with Writing Tales I and would love to continue to discuss it! One issue is that I have her signed up for a day of co-op. This includes WT, but mostly enrichment and fun classes. So, I don't really want a language arts program that has to be done 5 days a week in order to finish during the school year. This is why I'm considering not continuing with CLE, even though I really like that program. In the past (with other dc), I've used R & S and FLL3. I don't remember if those required 5 days a week. Do they? The thing I didn't like about FLL3 was that the diagramming lines were included in the workbook, and so the child didn't have to think about how to construct them (just plug in words with no thought). There's a chance we'd do CC Essentials in 4th grade.... I don't know. So, I don't want to choose something that would make that difficult for her. I'm not familiar with SL's LA, but I did just acquire an IG for LA3 -- it came with the reader set that I bought used. Should I just consider that? It would be much lighter, huh? kiwik
You could just do the diagramming in a note book.
PeterPan
One of the years we did a 4th grade grammar book and split it over two years. Might be perfect in your case.
birchbark
We did WT1 alone for third grade. Well, I guess we were also doing a handwriting program and some reading. If anything, I thought there was too much writing for that age, esp toward the end of the book. The stories get quite long. Taking dictation may have helped. We had an extra month or two at the end of the year so we followed it up with The Sentence Family. TSF is a quick, fun grammar program that really cemented the parts of speech for DS. RootAnn
When I did WT1 with oldest, I just added spelling to her regular reading (free or assigned). I thought the grammar was great as it really seemed to sink in. DD#2 will be doing WT1 this year (at a rather old age, I admit) and I'm not adding any grammar - just spelling. If you do add FLL, just do the diagramming on the white board & not in the notebook. (There are 89 lessons, I think, so you could do it three days a week.) I'm going to take a look at The Sentence Family and others too. I appreciate it!
