VeritasMama
Here's an article that shows a successful, large family that homeschoolss, and they are presented as completely normal. The mom said she wanted to show people how diverse homeschoolers really are. Thought others might appreciate it! http://shine.yahoo.com/parenting/meet-the-new--cool-duggars--the-hendersons-of-colorado-222835218.html One thing that did bother me was that the article compares this family to the Duggars. I don't dislike the Duggars, but I'm not sure why they need to be mentioned everytime someone in the media talks about homeschooling. Mommy22alyns
Unfortunately, the Duggars are the only "celebrity" homeschoolers out there right now. So people who don't know about homeschooling look at them and think, "Oh, that's how everyone does it!" No.
VeritasMama
I know, I've only watched the show a few times and I've never seen them doing school. When I read this article, the one thing I kept thinking was that I wish they'd mention what curriculum they were using, lol.
Mommy22alyns
I'm not even clear on how the Duggars homeschool because I've never seen an episode where they showed more than a minute of them schooling. I haven't watched the show that many times though. I know, I've only watched the show a few times and I've never seen them doing school. When I read this article, the one thing I kept thinking was that I wish they'd mention what curriculum they were using, lol. And therein lies the problem. Mommy22alyns
Okay, I read the article. It sounds like an awesome family! Good for them. They really should have avoided the Duggar references though.
Mommy22alyns
Well I think showing them homeschooling would be kinda boring, or perhaps they have asked not to have that be the focus of the show. I wouldn't want that kind if scrutiny. Plus how can one focus on school with a bunch of cameras? The show is snippets of their lives and they probably don't bother with the boring stuff. KWIM? True, but that doesn't stop people from leaping to conclusions, KWIM?
Lang Syne Boardie
The Duggars. That was one effective marketing technique! Now the rest of us are forced to have stupid interactions with strangers for the rest of our lives because the nation has seen one homeschooling family on their TV screens. "We homeschool." "Oh! Like the Duggars!" "No, not like the Duggars. (sigh)"
Jean in Newcastle
This sentence doesn't make sense: "Adding that the shop owner introduced her into this whole world of homeschooling that has a set curriculum." Does that make sense to you?
Mommy22alyns
Nope, Jean. I noticed that too.

Does that make sense to you? That's exactly what I was thinking. Interesting family though. Elise in NC
Jean in Newcastle
http://www.9news.com/news/local/article/319347/346/Family-of-7-kids-finds-a-way-to-homeschool-attend-college This is a better story about them, I think. And looking at their bookshelves, they used Alpha Omega as at least part of their curriculum.
theYoungerMrsWarde
They're probably likely to get more search hits with the keyword "Duggar" in the article.
NotSoObvious
They're probably likely to get more search hits with the keyword "Duggar" in the article. That was my thought, especially since they mentioned it a million times.
