Michelle My Bell
My almost 10 year old dd keeps telling me she wants a Leap Pad but I think she is too old for one. I am afraid she will get bored with it quickly. I haven't looked at them in person but I thought they were for little kids. What does everyone think? EDIT: Dec. 16th - I just learned of the Nabi. Anyone have one and can comment on it?
Farrar
Is it maybe the only tablet type device that she knows about and thinks is realistic to receive? I can't imagine my 8 yos asking for this - they would totally see it as a little kid thing.
Michelle My Bell
Are their tablet type devices for her age? We can't afford an ipad, and if we could, I would be getting it.
BigMamaBird
On one hand, yes she's too old. But on the other hand, it's not going to hurt her and if she really wants it and will play with it, why not. In my opinion it's better than all these 10 year olds you hear about "demanding" an iPhone.

Michelle My Bell
My boys have Kindle Fires. Can you tell me more about this? How do they use it outside of just reading?
Farrar
My boys have a Fire too. There are lots of Android apps for it. You can check email, use the web, etc. We also have an iPad, so by comparison, I have to say the app selection is lousy. But they really like it and have lots of decent games for it and a few educational things like math drill stuff. Plus they do use it to read. We got each of our kids one of these when Walmart had them on sale for $99. Unfortunately, they are sold out, but if you find a well reviewed Android tablet, that is Google enabled for access to the Google Play store, she would have access to all of the educational apps here: play.google.com/store. You can also read on any tablet by downloading the Kindle, Nook, or Kobo, etc. apps.

Yep--they use them to read, play apps (they're happy with the selection), check email, etc. My oldest uses it to listen to classical music during school, too. They watch netflix (or did, before the app started having fits) and videos through Amazon Instant (we have Prime).
plain jane
Instead of a tablet you could consider a Nintendo DS (3D). My 10yo still plays DS as well as our tablet.
