ProudGrandma
we were planning on getting an MP3 player and loading it full of free audio books as a family Christmas gift, but it seems that whatever site I look at, the audio books are "free" for a 30 day trial of audible.com. Is there any other way of doing this?? surely there are good free audio books out there, aren't there???

JennifersLost
Is there any reason they have to be free? Not to be a Debbie Downer, but is there any reason you don't want to pay the authors and audio book producers for their work?
Sun
Lots of libraries have audio books that you can check out. Have you tried your local library system? If they don't have them, I know there are some libraries that let you buy a pass or membership for digital access.

Reeciecup
I check them out from our library. Can you do that?
happypamama
Our libraries have lots of audio books that we can borrow, right from our home. DH does this all the time with his mp3 player; the audio books are only good for a certain period of time (2-3 weeks, I think), and then they won't work any longer. I've also gotten lots from librivox.
crazyforlatin
iTunes has free audiobooks. In fact, so does audible.com, not just during the trial period, although I believe most of us went through amazon.com to purchase the free e-book first. I will edit this post later to find that particular thread. If you go to this site, http://www.openculture.com/freeaudiobooks, you'll find a list of some free audiobooks and links. If your library has Overdrive, you can borrow a bunch of audiobooks and download them to your mp3 player. These books will expire, but at least you could listen to copyright protected books such as Harry Potter. ETA: here's the thread. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/424118-27-free-professional-quality-classic-audio-books-what-really/page__st__100__hl__audible#entry4374052
