Guest
I need a water soluble pen or pencil for some bags I'm about to quilt. Normally I kind of wing it, but I want these to look nice. They are both in really dark (black, brown) fabric, so it can't be that blue pen (that I actually have and hate). Chalk? What else is out there? WiseOwlKnits
You can use chalk, but it has a tendency to brush off. They make white and light blue quilter's pencils that you should be able to use easily. I cheat though and just use the kids' map colors. I've never had a problem with it. Just be gentle with it so the mark is light. Hope this helps!
Jann in TX
There is a water soluable white quilting pencil... tip is fragile if too sharp. It is great for marking dark fabrics. I've also seen it in pink and light blue too. I just use a damp cloth to remove after sewing/quilting.
justkeepswimming
I really love tailor's chalk - it's a little white triangle... sort of a waxy chalk. I believe it's made by Clover. I just use a dry, rough cloth to rub off the marks when I'm ready.
Tammi K
You can also find a white marker that has soluabe ink. I like it better than a pencil which has a fragile tip. Try a quilt shop. Hope you find something that works.
Candid
And there are water soluble papers that you can draw on, quilt over and then dissolve (although I would tear off as much as I could).
mumto2
I recently went to a great workshop on handstitching. The teacher uses a normal mechanical pencil for all of her marking. You really can not see it after and my project is pale blue and dds is pink. She said on darks she occasionally has to use chalk. She also talked about washable markers as a possibility. The important thing with those was getting all the ink out. She blotted the fabic on top of a towel until all was gone. Whatever you mark with make sure you know if heat will set it before you iron. Jane in NC
I am in love with Clover's Chaco Liner. It does not brush off as easily as tailor's chalk but will wash off. The product comes is several colors and is apparently refillable--although I have yet to attempt that.
Caroline
I use crayola washable markers, crayons, or colored pencils. They always wash out and don't require a trip to the fabric store because I have them in the house already. They also come in lots of colors. I used the blue on off white fabric. Some of it did not come off even after I resorted to washing it. Sigh. I used a Mr clean sponge on the burgundy fabrics and that worked great. I have the Chaco markers in yellow and blue. I'll test before using.
Guest
Hmmm...I will check some of these suggestions out at Joann's today when we go. For the dark fabric, I don't think the Crayola markers would work, although that's something I will remember and test for the future. Thanks!
