Is it too late to plant these bulbs?

Recommended Posts

Every spring, when our daffodils come up, I say I'm going to plant more next fall.

Well, I actually bought about 20 a few weeks ago and forgot to plant them.

Temps are around 38-40 night and 50's day right now. Is it too late to throw them in the ground?

I would. If not, and you're like me, you'll stash them in the basement or a closet somewhere and next year they'll have rotted away. So I'd take the chance on putting them in the ground. Better they rot there and have had a fighting chance than waste away in your hall shoe closet. :tongue_smilie: (though honestly, daffodils are pretty tough. I bet they'll be fine if you plant now. it's not *that* late for VA)

If your ground isn't frozen, go for it! I don't think I've ever planted bulbs before mid-November, and I often don't get around to it until December. We live where the ground doesn't freeze, so it's not a problem. My late-planted bulbs do seem to come up later than the others the first spring after planting.
