St. Louis for grownups

Recommended Posts

So dh decided he doesn't want to do Chattanooga for our 25th anniversary (which is fine by me). Going to do St. Louis for a quick trip (our anniversary is in late December, to crazy to go for a longer trip then), and then something special a few months later, when things aren't as hectic. What can't be missed? Kids will NOT be with us.

Thanks!!!!!

Yes, sometime that week but not on the actual holidays. I know... it'll be cold but we've done Boston that week so I think we can handle Missouri.

It may not be that cold. We rode out a tornado on New Year's Eve two years ago in a restaurant. :D

Wicked is playing at the Fox Theater that week, and the Saint Louis Symphony is performing that weekend. The carriage rides downtown should be running, and it will be beautiful downtown with all the decorations. There's the casinos, but they aren't really my thing.

If the NHL lockout ends, we might have hockey.

Still thinking. Our kid free dates usually consist of a movie or some obligatory work-related party. :tongue_smilie:

Thanks for your input! We aren't into casinos either.... I'm bored after about 30 minutes. We do love the symphony, and want to do some touristy things, like the Arch. How is the City Museum?

City Museum!!! It is fabulous, and two young-at-heart and mobile adults get a lot more out of it than if you had younger kids who needed to be supervised, which is a pain in the tunnels and slides. It is the right place to entertain your inner child ;-)

St Louis Symphony Orchestra is world class. See if you can get tickets; they perform in Powell hall.

Art museum is nice, but not spectacular; if you are from a large city, you may have seen better. But it's free.

Arch is a must-do for out of town visitors and well worth a visit if you have not been there.

River cruise is disappointing because St. Louis does not have a good riverfront and there is not much to see; it is a city that does not integrate the river well (historically because of the flooding)

Just looked at the City Museum website again.... it does look like fun. Enough to do without the kids though? The Arch is a must do, I've never been but dh has.... I looked at the symphony site but am not interested in watching Pirates of the Caribbean on the screen with the symphony playing. Dh and the kids did something like that with Star Wars & liked it but that's not really what I think of for the symphony. I like pops, jazz, etc but not watching movies..... thanks for the heads up on the cruise.

If you want to get a good workout go to City Museum! I wouldn't go there without my kids, because they've been there, and think it's the best place in the world. They would find out, and I would never hear the end of it.

Mine will not be going on our anniversary trip.... no way.... but I'm sure they'd enjoy if they had the pleasure.

I wouldn't do the City Museum sans kids because it's no more my thing than the casinos. I did take my kids there over the summer and they loved it. I needed a chiropractor afterwards.

I'd go to the arch if you've never been. http://explorestlouis.com/visit-explore/see-do/see-do-member/?mid=67

I love Forest Park. http://explorestlouis.com/visit-explore/see-do/see-do-member/?mid=229&gclid=CIjYp4LozLICFYNxOgodzFMANg

Shaw's Garden is my favorite place in St Louis, even in the winter. http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/

You could tour the Brewery http://explorestlouis.com/visit-explore/see-do/see-do-member/?mid=86

I also love Soulard's Farmer's Market http://stlouis.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=stlouis&cdn=citiestowns&tm=13&f=20&su=p284.13.342.ip_p554.23.342.ip_&tt=3&bt=0&bts=0&zu=http%3A//www.soulardmarket.com/

As silly as it sounds, the Brewery is beautiful in December. Lights inside and out...it's quite lovely.

Don't know if you're wanting to stay in the downtown area, but St. Charles is also beautiful at Christmastime. The big "Christmas Traditions" festival will be done after Christmas, but the decorations will still be up, and Main Street is gorgeous at any time of year!

We will probably stay near the Arch, which is the downtown area, right? What is the Brewery?

Cunetto House of Pasta for dinner one night. It's in the historic Italian district, which is called The Hill. When we went, we got there right at 5:00 when they opened and didn't have to wait long. It was SO GOOD.

Or anywhere on The Hill, really! Amighetti's. Charlie Gitto's. Zia's.

Restaurants..... one of the most important things! Thank you!

:iagree::iagree:

Botanical Gardens (with Climatron) are better in NON-winter months. :001_smile:

Lots of shopping: high end at Plaza Frontenac, mid level at the Galleria (plus Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Super Target, etc.) at Brentwood Blvd & Hwy 64 intersection.

Forest Park attractions are mostly free (Art Museum, Science Museum with IMAX--could have adult content, Zoo, Missouri Historical Museum, Muny Theater--outdoor theater, so nix that)

I also wouldn't do the City Museum without kids.

Enjoy!
