mommyofcb
HELP! WHICH TEST SHOULD I USE FOR 1ST GRADE? My daughter is behind on reading but would score incredibly well if I could read the questions to her. My state (Va) requires standardized testing. I've researched a TON but not found answers. Ellie
But VA also allows for evaluations instead of standardized testing. Perhaps you can find someone to do that. Also, is she not reading *at all*? She just has to score into the 23rd percentile. Reading the test questions to her would not be an adequate evaluation of her academic achievement, since the reading itself is part of the testing. Princess Peach
The CAT 1st grade level has a non-reader version. The IOWA is mostly oral at that age, too.
abbeyej
Really any of the tests should work. CAT, ITBS, Stanford... They're mostly oral at that level. They will testing reading skills to some extent, but they won't assume the child can read for other parts of the test. That usually kicks in at the 3rd grade level. athena1277
We used the CAT-5 from Seton for 1st. It's mostly oral, so if she's reading a little, she will be fine. If she's not reading at all, I would consider an evaluation this year.
MamaAkins
If you're looking at something you can administer, I would try the CAT/5. The Woodcock-Johnson would also be a good choice, if you're willing to go through an outside testing service.

ElizabethB
The ITBS is oral except for the reading section at that level. You can administer it at home if you have a degree.
