Anyone else notice the Pinterest privacy changes?

Recommended Posts

Gosh, Pinterest is really starting to get that Facebook, "we're changing our privacy settings--oh, did we forget to tell you? Sorry!" feeling :glare:.

I noticed that the board layout changed on Pinterest and then I noticed there was a little Facebook icon on my page. Of course, it took me right to my Facebook page, which, while I have it set to ultimate privacy, does have my real name. I just used my first name on Pinterest. I went to edit my profile on Pinterest and you can remove the Facebook link and hide your profile from search engines.

There is also a Delete Account button, which I hovered over for quite a while. The novelty has worn off and it may soon be time to say goodbye.

Now, this might not be the smartest of things to ask, but here's my question anyway. I was very concerned about privacy issues with Pinterest when I first started. But then I thought (as a dear friend kindly reminded me), who cares if Big Brother knows what my favorite recipe is or whatever? I mean, it's not like I'm putting highly personal info out there - street address, family pictures, etc. - it's all pictures from the web and nonsense trivial stuff. What's the worst that could happen? That someone knows, for example, that I love barre workouts? Well, won't they find that out here also?

Well the problem for me is that I use my real name on facebook and I didn't want people to be able to connect to my facebook page (even if private) and find my real name. Also didn't want people on facebook to know my pinterest username because I use it on some forums and messageboards. If I knew they were going to be linked I would have chosen a completely new and unique name for my Pinterest account.

Bottom line, I don't like it when companies set the default security to the minimum and change it after you're already using it. I didn't know what was going on until a bunch of facebook friends started linking to my pinterest account. I didn't even know what was possible since I used a completely different email to register, etc. I ended up deleting the account, which is too bad because its kind of a cool tool.

The problem I have is it was openly linking it to my FB account, without my knowledge, when I had previously edited my Pinterest profile to NOT link. They changed it without telling me. What else will they link?

Annnnnndddd, I just deleted my Pinterest account. I looked at some innocuous recipe on my food board that had 3 "likes". I looked at who had liked it and it was profiles linked to porn sites. I'm done. At least I've never had that sort of creep factor on FB.

I seriously can't get over that porn sites are trolling Pinterest. So, does anybody have any idea what they gain from it?

I remember getting a notification a few weeks ago that I had a new follower. I looked at the profile and the person was following like 800,000 people! I'm not tech savvy enough to know what information this person/company was gleaning, but it's obviously going into a databank somewhere!

Still grossed out :tongue_smilie:. It's back to archaic bookmarks for me.

Ick. Several of my friends have mentioned getting odd friend requests lately, and they decided it had to do with Pinterest.

This from a FB friend of mine, I already do this, but a good reminder. I don't think I want to give up Pinterest. I love it and find it relaxing, inspiring, entertaining, etc.

If you don't want your new profile page to have a direct link to your Facebook (or Twitter) account, click Edit Profile, then switch the Link to Facebook option to Off. Pinterest set them as On by default when they updated users' profile pages recently. While in the setting, I also chose to hide my Pinterest account from internet search engines. Gotta keep my stalkers guessing. :D

I have a fake Facebook account and a fake twitter account. I signed in under the fake twitter account. No one sees anything, nor knows who I am on pinterest. Well, except Skynet - they know everything, and there is no escaping that LOL!

This is me too. I don't have a Fb, and I signed up for twitter under a false name just to get onto Pinterest. My Pinterest name is fake, too.:D
