T'smom
Would it be odd to have a question on a rental application that asked for your bank name and account numbers?
Mama Geek
If it is for a credit check, no. I would expect them to want driver's lic and SS number as well.
Remudamom
No. As far as I'm concerned it's required.
T'smom
They do want drivers license/SSN. But I figured that wasn't out of line. Of course, your bank name and account number appear on your checks, so I guess maybe it's not that unusual.
T'smom
No. As far as I'm concerned it's required. So what would you do with the name/account number? If you call the bank, will they give you any information? (Since the name/account number appear on checks, I would assume that the bank would NOT give out any info- otherwise all you would have to do is get ahold of someone's checkbook and call up the bank and find out whatever you wanted to know?) RoughCollie
You are not required to give out your social security number, and I would not.
T'smom
You are not required to give out your social security number, and I would not. Can you run a credit check without that? It seems very reasonable to require a credit check- but I don't know if you can get that without a ssn.
3browneyedboys4me
We own a rental property and I have never asked for the bank acct. numbers. I have asked for social security, income, etc. I have reviewed credit reports, but never asked for a banking acct. number or institution. I think that might be excessive...but, I verify income from employment human resources. I guess there are lots of ways to go about it. I would not give that info out. That's just me though. I think that's too much info...but, you could always ask around and see if other places require that type of info.
A.Balaban
That information has been on a lot of applications, and most time the landlord will say "That information is not necessary- we don't use it."
DragonFaerie
I do not give out bank account numbers on applications. If it is asked for, I leave it blank. I will give the institution name and the types of accounts we have but that's it.
amey311
You CAN run a credit check without SSN, but it can be a little harder. Officially the only people to whom you need to give your SSN are your employer (for tax reasons), your financial institutions (ditto), and government agencies. http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/78/~/legal-requirements-to-provide-your-ssn
Riverland
I know some owners whose policy is that SSN is required, but bank account is not. They tell people to just ignore that part of the application. The reason it is even on the standard application is in case someone skips out owing rent/damage. It is another tool to track you down. Some owners require it, some don't.
TranquilMind
You are not required to give out your social security number, and I would not. You are not required to give out a social security number but you will not get the rental if you do not permit a credit check, which requires it. I cannot run one without it. There may be a way to do so, but my service does not.
