DawnM
Keeps pecking our house! We have a large hole in our house! (several inches wide). What can I do about this? Dawn
Jean in Newcastle
We had to get a metal piece (a screen actually because she was trying to enlarge a vent under the eaves). It stopped the damage to the house but we did hear "tink. . .tink. . .tink. . ." for awhile until she stopped. I say she because I think she was trying to build her nest in there. Mrs Mungo
This site has some suggestions: http://www.howtogetridofstuff.com/pest-control/how-to-get-rid-of-woodpeckers/ I see you're in NC, is it one of the endangered woodpeckers? If it is, then you probably would not be allowed to use some of the suggestions in the above link.
DawnM
Our ENTIRE house is made of cedar. No way to screen the entire house. I have heard this thing on all sides now although only one large damaged area, but several smaller ones. Pegasus
We have this issue every spring when they are looking for nesting sites. One year, they succeeded in nesting inside the siding so we had to wait for the babies to mature and leave the nest. ;) However, we try to catch it early and patch the holes before they get very big. Also, we hang toy snakes on the siding and that seems to help for a while. I think you need to keep moving them around or the birds get wise to it. We just bought more toy snakes yesterday! bbkaren
Maybe you're looking for a more peaceful resolution but my pellet rifle would take care of him quickly and painlessly...

You can't shoot endangered birds. That's why she needs to figure out what kind of woodpecker it is first.
DawnM
It looks to be a red bellied woodpecker, which isn't listed as endangered. But I don't anything stronger than an airsoft gun.

I'd bet the airsoft would do the trick if you've got the inclination. It's up to you, of course; as for me, I'm not a fan of critters ruining my things, and am happy to give the benefit of the doubt once or twice, but that's real damage that's going to cost you. DawnM
We have. It just seems to sting them a bit or scare them and then they come back. I am tempted to get a BB gun. DawnM
I will have to see. My house is 3 stories and has dormers. Of course the thing is pecking where it is very difficult to get to. Maybe try the resin thing then?
bbkaren
Good luck. Gah, the battle between us and nature never ends, eh?
